Marketing Overload

Just finished watching the 4pm news on Channel 15. Can those people say "ABC15" any more times in a half hour.
"This is ABC15 news at 4, I'm ...., (1st story); ABC15 reporter...., next story; ABC15 reporter..., next story; ABC 15 meteorologist...in the Desert Doppler 15HD Forecast Center...ABC15 reporter..."

I know all of the stations push their station names or catch phrase to some extent but Channel 15 just seems to take it over board.

And someone needs to tell ABC15's (oops!) main weatherbabe to cease using
the word "tracking," as in "we'll be tracking that system..."

Between "tracking" and "ABC15," it's kinda like KOOL-FM overplaying Cupid
by the Spinners (or Billie Jean). ;)

Channel 15 is in a situation where they are trying to gain brand recognition. Even though they have been in the market as an ABC affiliate, they are still a somewhat unknown station as far as news goes. I understand what they are trying to do but for the few people that are watching them, they might be killing it by trying too hard.

If you listen to KTAR, they say K-T-A-R hundreds of times per hour. I guess it has somewhat worked for them.

Well, I would compare Phoenix to a similar-sized market Seattle. Seattle's news is VERY different that Phoenix. Seattle is comparatively much more serious and much less marketing oriented. The marketing tends to be much more focused on news capabilities, rather than repeating some "in your face" slogan/branding (like ABC 15 or CBS 5 "Telling it like it is" or even 200 EVB).

I used to like 12 News before they "encouraged" all of their senior reporters to leave.

They've been this area's ABC affiliate since January 1995, and have had local newscasts beginning a few months before that, when they were still with Fox (and began running Good Morning America and World News Tonight at the same time when Channel 3 gave them up early). It's just that the quality of their newscasts has been up and down over the years - mostly down until recently.

I hear what many of you are saying, yet I'd rather be watching "ABC15" than any other news outlet in town.

Exactly! Serious choices are slim-to-none around here, but ABC15 appears to be improving. I just wish they would drop a bit of the attitude because they have a quality newsteam (Connie Colla is a true professional, Susan and Rebecca are excellent -- wish they had a better platform like a 6:30pm newscast, and I've always liked Steve).

Or how about this one: " I'm ABC15 Chief Meteorologist Amber Sullins, please join me at the Glendale Chocolate Affair..."

What the heck does being a meteorologist (or the chief meteorologist) have to do with a chocolate festival in Glendale?

I'm not quite sure why you're pointing out this about ABC15. Stations all over have been doing this for years.

ABC 15 is the TV sponsor of all public events in Glendale (before that it was 12, then 3). I believe 5 has a deal with the City of Tempe for their Fourth of July fireworks (correct me if I'm wrong).

However, the worst offender of over-promotion of a local event is FOX 10's plugging of the P.F. Chang's Rock 'N Roll Marathon TEN MONTHS before it even happens (I know that this year's marathon was two weeks ago, but this is the way they've done it in the past)!

By the way, they can get rid of their new weekend anchor, too. She's virtually unwatchable. I'm not impressed by anchors who try to be "tough-souding" and overly dramatic.

I'm just "telling it like it is"! Oops, wrong station... ;D

Hopefully, Rebecca and/or Susan will take over permanently and Katie will "decide" to stay home with her family.

Baby Daddy lives & plays in Toronto, so she's probably not giving up her gig & moving there, but who knows.

Also, Susan Casper is ridiculous with her outfits. Unless you're Lady Gaga, Liza Minnelli, Adam Lambert or Johnny Weir, no black sequins before 5 pm. EVER!!!

NO BLACK SEQUINS BEFORE HAPPY HOUR!!!

Even if they weren't an ABC affiliate they would have started local news. They had planned for 30 news staffers and a 9pm newscast that was made to match the "Fox feel" (read: "hip"). They already had their news set, the purple "spaceship" that 15 ended up using when they launched a toned-down newscast (but with almost triple the news staff!) on August 1, 1994 — months before they switched affiliation.
