Markets Lacking Top 40's

Markets Lacking Top 40's:
San Francisco
Las Vegas
Denver
Annapolis?Baltimore? But they do have Hot 99.5 to fill the void there really not that far out.
Sussex County,NJ They have B104,K104, Z100
Any others?

KLUC reports as a rhythmic. They're a pretty urban-leaning rhythmic at that.

In fact, going by station sound alone, you can add Detroit to that list. WKQI reports as a mainstream, but they're most definitely rhythmic. You pretty much have to be to keep a CHR alive in Detroit these days.

Well...if you must add rhythmic leaning CHRs to the list...

KZZP/Phoenix.
KIIS/Los Angeles.
WIOQ/Philedelphia.
WIHT/Washington DC.
WKST/Pittsburgh.

Shockingly better then WKSC

KIIS/Los Angeles.
Worse then WKSC but pretty much on the same level.

WIOQ/Philedelphia.
Way better then WKSC. WIOQ is much like how WKSC was JUST BEFORE hitting its current level.

WIHT/Washington DC.
WAY better then WKSC

WKST/Pittsburgh.
Haven't heard it.

Also which is even more shocking WSNX GRAND RAPIDS is better then WKSC

all in regards to being rhythmic leaning and not "balanced" enough

"Balance" does not bring in revenue.

I don't know where or who you are working for, but in some markets YES IT DOES. Drive up to WZEE in Madison, WI with that attitude. One of the most "balanced" stations in the country with ratings almost never below #1. You'll be laughed out of the building.

Same goes for WKFR in Battle Creek. Nice "balanced" and "dayparted" CHR station over there. Double digit ratings and #1 constantly.

Another one of the most balanced CHRs in the country. Clear Channel's "KISS" station in Fort Collins. VERY balanced. Ratings=Top 3

If ratings mean money like you say, then balance sure does mean revenue depending where you put it.

Oooh, I was waiting for the examples. Here we go:

WZEE: No rhythimic or Urban competitor.
WKFR: No rhythmic or Urban competitor.
KSME: No rhythmic or Urban competitor.

These stations would get smoked if a rhythm station signed on in their market.

Now, find me a CHR station who's direct competition is a rhythm or Urban station, that is "balanced" with "double digit" ratings or that is "#1 consistantly."

I don't know how it is doing now but you saw what happened to U93 in South Bend, Indiana a few years ago. Owned the market for years, once a rhythm station signed on...

OWNED!

Not even close. Look at their playlist, they are Mainstream CHR.

For most of the past 20 years Fresno has not had a maistream Top 40. A station tried it but switched to AC after an ownership change last year.

WZEE: Had WKPO for 10 years. Now they got WJQM, Neither beat them.

KSME has KQKS out of Denver sneaking into the market.

Then we can heard over to Market #1. Z-100 is beating the crap out WWPR and WQHT.

In Tampa WFLZ is kicking the crap out of WLLD

In Jonesboro, 101.9 Kiss FM has double digit numbers and they play ACTIVE ROCK overnights along with mixing in harder alternative music during the day also kicking the crap out of its urban/rhythmic competition.

Let's see
104.7 Kiss FM Phoenix plays: Gym Class Hereos Top 5, Pink Top 10, Eliott Yamin Top 10, Avirl at 12, Fallout Boy, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Daughtry all Top 20. Additionally in the Top 20 are Pop staples Gwen Stefani, Justin, Nelly Furtado, Fergie, and Akon. Oh and Augustana are in the Top 30

Q-102 Philly has Pink at number one, Gym Class Heroes Top 5, Daughtry Top 10, while Top 20 are Maroon 5, Fallout Boy, and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. LKots of Pop mainstays in the Top 20 including Beyonce, Gwen Stefani, Fergie, Nelly Furtado, Rihanna, Akon, and Justin Timberlake.

Kiss Pittsburgh has Augustana, Gym Class Heroes, Nickleback, Avril and Daughtry in the Top 20. Their Top 3 are all Pop mainstays (Gwen, JT, and Akon), Fergie is Top 5, Paula Deanda at 7, and both Beyonce and Nelly Furtado are getting plenty of airplay. Diddy is also pretty much a Pop mainstay.

Hot 99.5 Washington: Daughtry and Gym Class Heroes Top 5, Maroon 5 and Pink Top 10, Avril, Red Jumpsuit and Hinder Top 15, while Carrie underwood and Fallout Boy are Top 20. As usual, plenty of pop mainstays all over the Top 20 from Gwen, Fergie, Nelly F., JT, Christina Aguilera, Akon, Rihanna, and Beyonce.

As for KIIS-FM in L.A. what they're doing is obviously working - Power 106 is still ranked below them even though The Beat flipped from Hip Hop to Urban A/C.

I'd say KIIS and Channel 955 are definitely among the most Rhythmic intensive on the CHR/Pop panel, but I'll take them anyday over boring Adult CHRs like Star 94 Atlanta or Hot 105.3 Grand Rapids.

Kiss Chicago is doing a great job of battling B-96. In fact, it's ahead of B in the ratings again. In their Top 20 you can find Avril, Daughtry, Gym Class Hereoes, and Fallout Boy, as well as lots of Pop mainstays. Paula Deanda, Justin, Nelly Furtado, Ferige, Ciara, Akon, Beyonce/Shakira, Gwen Stefani, and PCD.

I agree with rapking on Kiss 108, except it's in direct reverse (has to be to protect gangsta rap Jam'n 94-5). In short, I consider Kiss to be a rock 40 post-Sunny Joe White. Just a sample of the artists they play:

Advil Latrine - rock
Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" - rock, especially given that both 'BCN and 'AAF play the song
Gwen Stefani/No Doubt - rock
Nickelback - rock
Hinder - heavy metal, aka the un-PC moniker of active rock
3 Doors Down - rock
Creed - rock
Dave Matthews - rock
Hoobastank - rock
All-American Rejects - rock
The Killers - alt-rock
Fall Out Boy - alt-rock
Blink-182 - rock
Sublime - rock (they've always played Sublime way more than your average CHR dating back to '96)
Third Eye Blind - rock
Green Day - rock
Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 - rock
The Fray - rock (always on 'BCN and 'FNX)
Barenaked Ladies - rock
Red Hot Chili Peppers - rock
U2 - rock

I don't think I got every rock artist that Kiss plays, but this represents at least 75% of Kiss' music since John Ivey (who has a history of running rock 40 stations; he's now at KIIS, which runs the same exact format as LA's Star - a huge reason why Star's ratings are so bad) took over from 1994 to 2002. Cadillac has the keep the rap music on Jam'n completely separated from the rock on Kiss otherwise both stations will suffer because people won't be able to tell Kiss apart from Jam'n.

Uhhh....85% of the artists you argue are Rhythmic tracks...

Elliott Yamin's "Wait For You" sounds like Brian McKnight's "Anytime".

Akon is straight forward Rhythmic.

Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado, Paula DeAnda, Beyonce, PCD, Rihanna, Ciara, Fergie, and Justin Timberlake...these ALL have a Rhythmic edge to them.

Ooh, I was waiting for you to say that. WIXX Green Bay. Balanced as all hell. #2 in the market. Competitor: WKSZ - 95-9 Kiss FM. RHYTHMIC LEANING. 7th in the market.

As you say...

OWNED!
