Markets With A 50s/60s Oldies Station

Is there a playlist I could take a look at?

c
They don't stream online - the only way to hear 'em is over the air at 770am and an FM translator which doesn't come in at all where I'm located. I'll try to listen to an hour or so and write down the tunes played for you at some point this week.

Oh my! That is a true late 50's / early 60's playlist of music. Hands down the winner of the type of Oldies the OP is looking for. This is a unique, one of a kind station. Thanks vChimp, for bringing 63 WAYS to our attention. Great news, they also stream!

770 WKFB, coming in loud and clear on my early 70s Panasonic stereo...
Starting at 10:30am:
"Color Him Father" - The Winstons
"La Dee Dah" - Billy & Lillie

"Sea of Love" - Phil Phillips
"Forever" - Marvelettes (Not a hit nationally but big in Pittsburgh; great record).
"Cathy's Clown" - Everly Brothers
"Rag Doll" - 4 Seasons
"Just a Little Bit" - Rosco Gordon
"Roll Over Beethoven" - Beatles
"Up Around the Bend" - CCR
"Ride My See-Saw" - Moody Blues
*Top of the hour ID @ 11:00*
"Sunshine, Lollipops, & Rainbows" - Leslie Gore
"Marie" - Four Tunes
"So Much In Love" - Tymes
"Rockin' the Joint" - Esquerita
"Denise" - Randy & the Rainbows
"Flatfoot Sam" - Oscar Williams
"Love Is Here (And Now You're Gone)" - Supremes
"Sooner Or Later" - Grass Roots
"Undun" - Guess Who
"I'm So Young" - The Students
"Midnight Hour" - Wilson Pickett
"Born Too Late" - Poni-Tails
"The Good, Bad, & Ugly" - Hugh Montenegro
"Cradle of Love" - Johnny Preston
"Hanky Panky" - Tommy James & Shondells
*missed this song*
"I Want To Take You Higher" - Sly & Family Stone
"Puppy Love" - Paul Anka

They've definitely reverted back to more "golden oldies" - at one point, they had quite a bit of 70s in their playlist. Their sister station, 620 WKHB, was doing 70s-present, which has now been walked back to 60s/70s/80s and WKFB is more 50s/60s. If it were my station, I'd emphasize the late-60s a bit more than they currently are, but the variety is excellent.

About every other song, there are also custom jingles inserted. Sounds great!

This looks good too. Asheville NC used to have an HD station (with a translator) like this, but it moved more toward 70s music which to me didn't sound good, and then I read it went Spanish.

Wow, that is a solid late 50s/early 60s playlist!

Is it receivable by any Internet SDRs anywhere? I'd like to listen for myself!

Yup - they do a real swell job. I don't believe they do any streaming online and only have a very limited web presence (not paying streaming royalties is definitely a cost-cutter). It's pretty much just ota for them.

I'm thankful to have their stations in my listening area - all of them are well-done and have deeper playlists than typical. They're a joy to listen to, not to mention they've got some pretty unique offerings.

I'm envious. The radio dial is so boring here, that I've had to resort to making my own radio station so I can listen to my music while still enjoying the "experience" of listening to the radio.

I'm asking about playlists because I'm hoping to emulate aspects of stations like this. So far, my station has no format, no imaging, and is such a wide amalgamation of genres that it is basically a sort of random music player.

I know that one! I discovered it recently while trying to listen to KQV. It also happens to be one of the better sounding wideband ones, so it's possible to open up the the frequency response to 10kHz instead of the usual 6kHz.

Yeah, it's very special for sure. There are a few folks on here who really like to pooh-pooh the Stevens because they are small operators who don't operate their stations for maximum profitability (which is subjective, of course), but one thing is for sure - they really do provide a ton of enjoyment for a lot of people who tune in. For the record, they also own KQV and are the ones responsible for the beautiful music there. Pittsburgh is really lucky to have them.

I'm pretty young, so I was still in elementary school when the great Clarke Ingram was doing stuff on 620 WKHB. Really wish I could've heard him!

Building your own "station" can definitely be quite challenging, but very rewarding too.

Yep, it sure is.

I'm listening to WKFB right now, and it actually sounds like my playlist matches up pretty well, which means I've accomplished my goal.

The only things my station lacks are imaging and a name. At this point, it's little more than an automated jukebox, albeit one that I've programmed meticulously and which any passerby with an AM radio can tune into. I've also been obsessing about audio processing and the resulting sound quality, which I'll admit doesn't matter much with most modern radios, but I have to say, it sounds quite fantastic when done right on an older radio.

I had been obsessing with range until I saved up enough to buy a ChezRadio Procaster. I must say that range is no longer a problem, and it's 100% legal (although I do wonder how it's possible that I can hear it from at least 10 miles away despite it transmitting without being grounded at the permitted 100mW; not that I mind, as long as it's legal).

I am trying to put together a list of top 100 markets with a 50s/60s Oldies station. Off the top of my head, only Milwaukee comes to mind (I know the station is somewhat of a rimshot, but it has good reception downtown). If anyone does not mind, can you add to my list? Thanks in advance.

WRXS isn't a rimshot. They're licensed to Brookfield, which is right next to Milwaukee on the west side, but the tower is currently right in the middle of Milwaukee County, near Saga's Milwaukee studios. It's only a Class A at 4400 watts, however, which does give it limitations. Still, it covers the market adequately.

I have picked it up nicely in downtown. But anywhere south of the city, I have had trouble. It also does not carry well going north.
