Maron's Back

Marc Maron, who cohosted a morning talk show with Mark Riley for a year and half, will be hosting a nightly talk show on AAR affiliate KTLK-AM 1150 in Los Angeles starting on Tuesday, February 28 at 10 pm.

Maron's national Show "Morning Sedition" was cancelled in December. Since that time he has relocated to Los Angeles. He reported that his new show was going to launch on his website this morning.
______________

... replacing a three-hour-delayed Mike Malloy, it would seem.

...which web site appears to be FUBAR at the moment. Probably preparing for re-launching on a different host, timed to coincide with his appearance on KTLK.

I'm on Marc's mailing list... but I don't see any e-mail from him today.

Well, now I have to remember to program Replay Radio for 1 AM Wednesday!
______________

Note to Marc

More TALK and less Show. The interaction from the host with the callers makes a talk show to me. Not someone trying out his act to prepare for the Improv.

This is a good move for Maron as AAR has neglected Night Owls and West Coasters, not to mention Hawaii. Maybe the network will pick up his show.

Here it is...

"Geniuses, Philosopher Kings and Queens, Working Class Heroes, Progressive Utopians with no sense of humor, Lurking Conservatives-

Marc Maron's Fire Truck Productions and Air America Radio are proud to announce the impending birth of The Marc Maron Show, by C-Section, Tuesday February 28th at 10:00PM on KTLK AM 1150 in Los Angeles California.

Those present at the birth will be comedian Jeff Ross and Oscar nominated screenwriter of A History of Violence, Josh Olson. And, of course, Jim Earl and Brendan ‘PW’ McDonald will be assisting during the procedure. As you all know, it might get messy."

Good points you make. I'd just add that he might also reconsider the non-stop "angry New York Jew" aspect to his comedy. No slur intended, but, that persona gets tiresome and tedious...quickly. Marc is funniest when he's wailing on the Right unmercifully.

More details are now posted on Air America's web site:

Marc Maron Returns to Air America Radio
Statement:

“The Marc Maron Show” to Premiere, Tuesday, February 28, at 10:00 p.m. PST

NEW YORK-February 24, 2006-Air America Radio announced today that comedian Marc Maron, former co-host of “Morning Sedition,” will return to the network on February 28, at 10:00 pm PST, when it debuts “The Marc Maron Show.” The announcement was made by President Gary Krantz.

“The Marc Maron Show” will air from 10:00-12:00 am PST out of KTLK 1150 AM in Los Angeles and will be syndicated through Air America Syndications. The program is a nightly Los Angeles variety show, complete with live comedy, in-studio announcers, and one-on-one interviews. “The Marc Maron Show” has a laid-back performance and interview style reminiscent of “The Late Show with David Letterman” or “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” with an emphasis on culture (including politics) and comedy.

Regular characters will include: Planet Bush Bureau Chief Lawton Smalls, Inside-the-Beltway Odds-maker Johnny K Street, Ultra-conservative alter-ego Marc the Shark, and Cardinal Milfington’s Rapture Watch.

"We are thrilled to be the flagship station for Marc Maron's new show on Air America,” said KTLK’s Station Manager John Quinlan. “Many of our listeners have been asking when Marc will be back on the air and we are happy tell them that it will be next week."

“We're going to be drawing talent from my friends in the comedy and sketch community out here in LA to create new characters, bits and insanity,” said Maron. “We've got great weekly guests lined up. I've got new issues, the world has new issues, and we're ready to go. We think it will be the funniest, most informative, late night radio show on the air.”

New York

Unless a change has been made, the program will not air in New York. WLIB goes back to the owner from midnight to 5 am.

What About Doug

This is probably bad news for Doug Basham and maybe the final nail in the coffin for his show. He doesn't have many affiliates and Maron could pick up those. He's a talented liberal talk host but his show suffered from a lack of guests and a lack of callers. Some nights it was sort of a talking blog with Doug reading articles. He was a pioneer in syndicated liberal talk before Air America. If he can't find a way to keep going, I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

Except for Liz Winstead, nobody gets fired from Air America. They just pop up in a different time slot. That's different from most of radio.

Huh? Air America is syndicating the show. Any station that wants it can have it, like all the other Air America shows.

Probably becasue the fans are so fervent for some of these people and there is planty of airtime laying around. Marc will be live 1-3 AM EST.

Liz ranks up there with Riley and Springer for fan base amongst the true beleivers. I expect some stations will dump Riley for a tape delayed Marc.

Speaking of Riley, how do you think he is doing with his two-hour morning show 5a-7a? Personally, I think they will ultimately give him another slot and make Rachel Maddow the full four-hour host 5a-9a.

personally im glad to see the return of lawton smalls...and cardnial milfington
and his show would be great to put on late nights to replace repeats.....
hopefully my station will dump springer for this show....

Well, I haven't listened since he was on 5-9 earlier this year (and end of last year). He subs for Maddow. He was just plain awful IMHO. I never liked him on MS anyway- but Marc shows promise. MS really improved before cancellation and Marc has the potential to be a good late night or morning host. Riley helped keep him in-line, but I think a lot of radio talent could do that- and probably do it better. The only reason I can figure Riley is still on the air is that it is part of an agreement with WLIB. If and when that ends (I think it might be sooner than we think) Riley will go back to local or maybe do something like Chuck D- a weekend morning show might work. Wayne Gelman (sp?) should also be worried.

Maddow would be great for three hours but 4 may be pushing it for content. Really, how many of the stations she is on are at full power (or even on the air) much before 7 AM, let alone 6, most of the year anyway? She has morning drive time during the time most stations are at full daytime power and most people are on the road. Not bad. Good thinking by AAR brass if Riley has to be kept on for the time being.

> personally im glad to see the return of lawton smalls...

Lawton Smalls would only be appearing by long-distance telephone (for REAL this time), as Kent Jones is still working for Rachel Maddow in NYC. I'd guess that Jones would be just coming to work about the time that Maron's second hour would be airing, so it's possible.
______________

The press release says Maron will "return to the network" but "will be syndicated through Air America Syndications." I presume this is the "syndication division" which sells the Thom Hartmann Show to stations, many of which are not affiliates of Air America's network. The press release also calls this a "variety" show and stresses comedy not political talk. Does this mean they are trying to get this show on other than regular Air America affiliates and maybe even other than progressive talk stations? Is the show being included in the regular network feed?

I guess we'll find out tomorrow night.

Mike Malloy's show ends at 1 AM Eastern, which is 10 PM Pacific -- which is, coincidentally, when Marc Maron's show starts.

If Maron replaces the regularly-scheduled Franken repeat on the web stream, we might expect (given no certain knowledge to the contrary) that it's also going out on the network feed.
______________
