Martini Lounge Radio 1340 Shake-Up

Tom Taylor reports that there's been a shake up at 1340. Hopefully they won't dump the Martini Lounge format. Granted, the format hasn't gained traction in any market ASAIK but, I'd hate to see it go. It has a small but loyal folowwing and these folks need a station. Granted it's a computer plugged into the processing rack but aren't many stations these days. The last thing we need is another ethnic station or time brokerage station althought I fear that's where this will end up.

Not sure this required a separate thread, but since I am not an admin, I'll bite. It depends on how much of Tom Kelly went into where. Was Skin Radio more of his puppy than Martini Lounge radio? That alone will dictate the fate of 1340AM. Either way, one would assume it is doomed, which is a shame. Is more local programming the answer? A concentrated promotions effort, including advertising? Perhaps either opening up the library and/or include national programming? Who knows for sure. Not sure one can do too much with this graveyard frequency.

Where exactly is does this station reach? I have very rarely been able to tune it in. And even then, I was only doing it because of discussion on these boards. (Which leads me to believe the majority of listeners aren't aware that a 1340 AM even exists.) For the sake of those involved, I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect it won't matter what format(s) they go with.

I can't pick it up in a listenable format (i.e., anything a non-radio-geek would tolerate) on the road in the Jenkintown, Norristown or southeast Delco areas.

It's easy to throw ideas out there that cost other people's money, but it doesn't seem like there'd be enough potential return on investment to make it work.

WHAT's problem is signal. That's it in a nutshell. The Standards format isn't going to soar to the top of the charts, but it has always been able to carve out a niche. One that could probably make money if owners targeted local advertising and skipped the myopic agencies. But 1340 in Philly is a short-spaced Class IV AM with additional signal problems. A have a friend who lives in Westmont, NJ who can't pick it up - even during the day. If somehow Martini radio could develop an Internet-based business model with the AM as a bonus, that might work. But to make money, one needs to do more than just keep costs down. One must sell spots or programming blocks.
