Marty Lurie Jumps From A's To Giants...

Heard on The Sports Leader yesterday that the venerable (not to be confused with Max Venable) Marty Lurie was heading over to KNBR to do a Giants weekend pre-game show.

Today, MLB.com has a very detailed piece about it:

From the article, quoting Marty:

"Toward the end of September, I started contacting KTRB but couldn't get answers to any of my e-mails or phone calls as to what the plans were for this next season. It went into late November when I found out that they were looking into different programming."

"Essentially they said the A's had too much pregame time and they wanted to have a talk show on," said Lurie, whose show always aired at 5 p.m. on days Oakland played night games. "I had an inclination this was happening and had heard rumors in September, so it was obvious I wasn't in their plans."

Any relation to Bob Lurie?

Bob Lurie, the one-time owner of the Giants (who stepped in and saved the team from moving to Toronto), is the son of one of the legendary figures in San Francisco history, Louis Lurie.

Here's a colorful story about Louis Lurie from Time magazine in 1943:

Marty Lurie, who was a criminal defense attorney in San Francisco, grew up in Brooklyn.

I wish Marty well in his gnu endeavor with the Giants...

As the great Lowell Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat (formerly with the S.F. Chronicle) said
of Marty when his "Right Off The Bat" debuted in April 1998, "Finally: Radio With Brain, Heart"...

Got to meet Marty when KATD 990 was "co-flagship" station of the A's in 1998...a good man...

Sounds like the station can't figure out whether it wants to be a talk station or a sports station.

From what I can tell, the format is immaterial. Anything that avoids bankruptcy will be OK!
