Marty Thompson exits WUBE

If I told him once, I told him twice, DO NOT TRY OUT LaBarbara. Would he listen...Nooooo. He takes an extended vacation afterwards and while he's out of the country, they change jingles, liners, fire the morning producer and ambush him on his first day back.

I always heard Bonneville took care of their people. I wonder if this was a local or corporate move?

On top of that not a bad trend either. Marty is good people, sorry to hear it.

I can just see your wheels turning, RumourMonger. "How can I sneak in a shot at a guy who's no longer even on the air in Cincinnati"? Whether you were trying to be funny or not, it's tiresome.

And from what I've heard, every week was a vacation week for Marty Thompson. Seems to me they didn't really need him. They got the numbers whether he was there or not.

Marty will land on his feet; good luck to him. He is a great guy and knows radio. It's Bonneville's loss.

Bryant is the culprit in this move, make no mistake. I'm guessing he never clicked with Marty; probably didn't attend the monthly ass-kissing event, "Cafe Bryant".

Patty Marshall as interim PD? WTF?? What about Cathy?

Let's see...Jim Fox, Dave Allen, Chuck Finney, Tony Marino, Tommy Frank, now Marty...the parade of good PDs who were undermined by this guy keeps growing and growing. And will continue to until someone at BIC gets wise.

Man, I really hate to hear that about Marty- I worked with him at a couple of Bill and Sue Dalton's stations. All around nice guy, and top notch PD.

Attendance is part of the job.

yes it is...but it's not like Marty went AWOL! Bryant approved it----geez, Marty was off trying to do something good for the world by saving a kid from most certain death and this is how he is treated??!!

Marty is an incredible programmer and radio guy, not to mention a wonderful person. B's lost will be another stations gain!

Marty always finds the vein...He is an outstanding person, and has the chops for a newly re-emerging format..Watch him grow like a chia-pet.

Here's how to order...

Mr Infomercial..

Don't take a vacation, or get hurt or die, You could be next of getting the AX from Bonnille.

I think getting the ax from Bonneville would be the least of your worries if you were dead!

Seems to me that both parties were wrong...The corporate clique conspiring to boot him and Mr Marty should have seen it coming..and should have re-grouped to move on. Hope Marty goes back to the oldies party. Will Dusty and the DJO gang take him in? I kinda hope so..but please Marty,no more extended vacations or voice tracking from Vegas...........K?

why do people care about these old jocks and an old format? Is eveyone on this board 55+ ??

Seems likes it.

Life and time moves on. Hopefully marty saved some money..

geez....when did early 40's become OLD--'cause that what Mr. Thompson is!

BTW, ilovescotch, you don't have to be in the demo to program or work at an Oldies Station. Marty was in his 20's when he started working at WGRR. THAT is a sign of a GREAT radio person...one who knows their target audience and can be relatable no matter what THEIR age and/or musical taste may be.

Maybe people care about "old jocks" because Marty is a well liked, well respected radio programmer who got the shaft from Bryant. As for DJO, it'll never happen. BUT, Marty has maintained a relationship with all those folks and I'm sure they'd love to have the chance to work with him again. He really has a way of creating an exciting energy with his staff.

I'm sure Marty will dust off his cane ;) and find himself another great opportunity!!

And since when was a country station an "old" format?

Yeah, I know. Marty once worked for WGRR, an "oldies" station. But, he was programming WUBE, the city's
country leader.

Country is anything but an "old" format. Check out the demos at a Carrie Underwood or Big & Rich show.

That is, unless you are around 15 years old and spend your whole day listening only to one type of station.

I wish a few of you younger posters would stop the insults at we adults who work full time, day after day, in radio.

Your day will come, and you will get your chance. Some, maybe earlier than others. Some later. I look forward to seeing what you will bring to the table.

But, please. Learn what you're talking about before you "pop" off on these boards. It makes you look foolish.

And, as for myself...the learned opinion of someone whose spent 35 years (so far) in radio: you've got a ways to go yet....

Re: Dead guys getting the axe...I sense a new marketing opportunity for astute lawyers. The next time Bryant fires a dead guy, he'll be in for a big juicy wrongful-termination lawsuit.

If there were real justice in radio, he'd be the dead guy getting fired. Are you reading this, Bruce?

sorry 'bout the edit...

overall, a better question, seems to me that Bryant has been there an awfully long time, I know of a few people personally who left because of him. What does it take to get rid of management these days?

What does it take to get rid of management?

Simple:

Bad (Or sharply declining) revenue and/or ratings....

or a lawsuit the company can't win.

One, the other, or both is what gets rid of managements.

There's always been alot of posters who do not like Bryant on these boards for several years. If he's that bad, how does he hang in there? Does he work cheap, have pictures , does CC pay to keep him in charge of their competition? Is he a magician?

JC: I once interviewed with a GM (who once worked in Dayton and Cincinnati as I recall, although this station was in the Northeast) who had a competitive situation where he was an upstart facing a competitor with a huge ratings advantage. His game plan was not to beat them, but to be a viable midpack station. He did not want to win, because it would be harder to make money equal to the rating. His owners (partners in this case) would have set the financial bar too high. This is part of Bryant's game plan as I see it. Q102 has never had the shares it had before he got in the GM chair. Same for WGRR (note its moves upward in recent days now that he is not involved). And every time a sharp PD has started making the needle move up, he has stuck his nose into programming to sabotage the effort. How many morning shows have been quashed at Q102 on his watch?

I call this technique "strategic mediocrity"...the strategy being, as Governor LePetamane once said, to "save our phony baloney jobs"! ("I didn't get a harrumph outta you. You watch yer a**!")

Unless he is an egohead with bad programming sense that just has to meddle, this can be the only logical explanation. The fact that he is still in place means people above him either must be in on the joke, or else this guy's a brilliant BS artist.
