Marty's leaving The Mountain

as noted on his facebook page over the weekend. no other immediate plans mentioned. I do join with many others I'm sure in wishing him all the best!!!

I guess it says something about the state of The Mountain, or maybe radio, when Rebecca Stevenson gets more traction on a radio board than a long time talent like Marty leaving. No one wants to know who's replacing him, or has anything to add. Hmmmm.

Why can't they just blow it up already? Sheesh...the ratings have been tanking on that station for YEARS! Literally! Yes, I love AAA, but don't do a poor execution of it! Be like KBCO!

It's sad what happened to KMTT. The station used to really reflect its market. Then with the departure of talent like Shawn Stewart and a format change to classic rock, it's become increasingly irrelevant.

Of all markets that should be able to sustain a stellar AAA, it's Seattle. And pre-Entercom, they did.

HUH?

Entercom has owned 103.7 since it was B/EZ "K-Bird FM 104"

As has been pointed out, KMTT has always been an Entercom station. Looks like they really tried, but in the PPM world all that unfamiliar music was deadly. That "niche" approach was fine when passionate listeners filled out diaries, and sales could make a qualitative pitch, but that ship has sailed. Y'know, we like to think we're a AAA-friendly market, but maybe we're not. If we were, Arbitron sure couldn't find those folks. Don't you think the true test of AAA's viability will be if someone else gives it a shot here? Who would do it? And how?

If they can make it work in podunk Portland, they can make it work here.

If you're going to be allowed to hold five or six licenses in a market, you have to expect a couple of them won't be in the "top five" of the ratings. And if you're not OK with that, then let someone else program some of those frequencies who doesn't live or die on a set of moving-target AQH numbers.

Chris was doing a hell of a job, hell she built that station form the storefront it was housed in in Tacoma to what it became at it's height.
Any coincidence that it's demise came after she left? and that she's doing very well down in Portland?
I think that says a lot, that and that Entercom has tried to cheap out and have pushed out some talented people who really made that station what it was.

Will John Fisher go down with the ship? Maybe the old Mtn dj's should get together and start their own radio station.

KMTT used to be a great station to listen to. Not anymore.

It's kind of ironic that they even still sell "Live From the Mountain Music Lounge" cds anymore. The music on the CD isn't hardly (or seems like at all) played on that station anymore. The Mtn seems to be turning into a KZOK or KJRFM wanna be. That's not good.

Exactly!
They tried to make them a classic rock or classic hits type station when that wasn't what the station was all about at all

KMTT should hire the folks who used to program the former KMCQ and give us back a deep 60s and 70s (and some 50s) oldies play list. Then, get a restraining order to keep Jay Kelly at least five miles away from the station for the next 10 years or so. ;)

That ST article is one of the most self-gratifying, pontificating, navel-gazing pieces of journalistic goo that I have read in a LONG time.

Sounds like a total mid-life crisis.

He felt he was "lying" just because when the format changed and he felt something "died?"

Dude...It's just a format change. Do you think it will last forever?

What an eejit!

Truth hurts, huh?

I'd love to hear the before & after stories from sales execs. How painful it now must be.

this reeks of silly season, as they call it in NASCAR. as the season comes to a close, many crew members, owners, and drivers start the game of musical chairs amongst each other, complete with the rumours, quotes, and denials dished out through the sports media.

okay, so marty announces his departure, and then his blunt negative opinions of his former radio team. so do you all really think marty's just gonna put this comment out, with out having his bases covered for the future?

yep, my critical thinking says look for a return of adult album alternative in seattle 2013, along with many of your long time AAA favorite on air personalities. until then, we all gotta dig a little deep on the internet, and sat radio for that stellar new van morrison music that them centralized corporate radio cats think no one is interested in......

p.s. yes, marty we all agree with your comments regarding your former station "the mole hill" er um "the mountain".

Give the boy a bit of credit for hanging out as long as he did at a known basket-case station. The "lying" bit was a little over the top and egotistical, but at least he (as far as we know?) didnt pollute his work environment with his declining attitude. And by the way Marty..you're not there to listen to tunes and dig the music format. The mountain hasn't exactly been an ARB barn-burner and they have to pay bills (including air staff) with something called money. That comes from advertisers. Go talk to the sales staff about that part.

Because the Mountain's really doing so much better now that they've ruined the brand to become KZOK-2.

I think when Marty says he's "lying", he really means he's "dying". Yeah, sure it smells like midlife crisis, but KMTT is on it's last legs----beyond repair in format of mediocrity. I can't stand the station, haven't tuned in for over a year now.

The strategy I advocated last year is to at the very least adopt The HD 2 signal and put it on the 103.3 translator, and give people a reason to transition to the new music format over-the-air on that frequency. Then, if that received some traction, get the HD 2 back on the mainline at 103.7 Megacycles and dump their current shitty format.

I surmise that the Entercom engineers didn't want to give up the translator and liked the power density of 105 dbu into downtown rather than the 88 dbu mainline density into all of those business and condo buildings. But in doing so they fell on their sword.

It's important to have a large cume, but having a monster AQH is actually more important. This shows loyalty to the station and a higher time spent listening. The reason is that, given several stations in the market, the station that delivers the higher AQH with a similar cume will be cheaper to the media buyer. Cume divided by the AQH x 3.29= X. The lower number the better.

What I am saying is that KMTT doesn't have to be a cume hero. They can do quite well fostering a sizable, loyal audience. So what I'm really saying is that KMTT should take a chance and run their HD 2 program on their mainline 103.7 MHz. Now how they transition that could be dicey, and deserves some thought. But maybe, just maybe it will all work out just fine.
