Mary Nam leaves KOMO

She doesn't know what's next, but its time to leave. Sounds like a non-renewal or couldn't come to terms on a new contract.

Nam arrived and after a short stint as a general assignment reporter, she took over anchoring weekend mornings from Julie Ogata and after not too long in that slot, launched the 4PM weeknight newscast.

That newscast, somewhat lighter and free flowing, was her best fit. Bouncing past a series of other great, longer tenured candidates at KOMO, she became Kathi G's regular fill in through her health struggles, and without much fanfare, became the main weeknight female anchor. I didn't think she was as compelling on the harder, more traditional evening newscasts she worked as the primary anchor.

We'll see where KOMO looks for a replacement.

Anchor Mary Nam to leave KOMO News at end of month after 23 years

After more than two decades on Seattle television, KOMO news anchor Mary Nam has announced her departure at the end of the month.

I grew up with Mary Nam. First News at Four, paired with the late Steve Pool, the "KOMO Question", the Buzz with Kent Phillips, Eric's Little Heroes segments, the whole works. We watched her as she welcomed her baby boy into the world.
She will be missed at KOMO, and best wishes in her future endeavors.
 
Wishing Mary all the best! Who is likely to replace her? Molly Shen has been there forever (or so it seems). Michelle Esteban has also been around a while. Or will they go with one of the am anchors or someone from outside KOMO?

Both of them are excellent anchors KOMO could pick as their next lead.

Honestly Molly Shen has a pretty good schedule right now, doing the 11AM and 5PM newscast. That's as close to bankers hours as you can get doing TV news. Does adding the 6:30 and 11PM give more visibility? Maybe, in exchange for a worse schedule.

Mary just anchors the 4 & 6 pm shows. The 11 pm is soloed by Preston similar to the 11 pm shows being soloed anchored on King and Kiro. If Molly were to take over for Mary then it would be at 4 & 6 with presumably someone else taking over Molly’s shows at 11am, 3.30pm and 5 pm

Preston solo'ing the 11PM is fairly recent. Its not uncommon for long tenured anchors to ask to step away from the 11PM broadcast. Kathi Goertzen did the same thing leaving Dan Lewis solo for 3-4 years before returning (because Mary Nam's profile at the station was rising).

If they either move Molly, or hire someone new, I'm certain they'll look to go back to 2 anchors at 11pm.
 
Kelly Koopmans announced this morning that she is leaving the morning newscast and shifting to afternoons. She will co-anchor the 3:30pm alongside Steve Soliz and the 4 pm alongside Molly Shen. We now know what at least the 4 pm will look like. Change happens later this month.
