MASH Marathon on TV Land - Another Screw-up

For the past week TV Land has been running ads for a MASH marathon tonight and tomorrow (I know - it's almost like a MASH marathon every night on TV Land - My wife has already told me that. :D) with the theme "The Men of MASH." instead it turns out that the actual theme is famous guest stars according to bumpers and the schedule. To me this is actually a better theme than the one that was advertised during the week, but why would they run misleading ads that had nothing to do the the real theme for the weekend? Oh, wait - we're talking about TV Land aren't we?? ::)

So nice how TVL and Hallmark cut important scenes out of the eps. to fill in every single nanosecond of commercials.

I instead tape MASH eps. that air on a local affiliate on Sunday evenings, when there is a greater chance of the entire episode airing.

I notice how the cable chs. cut out a significant chunk of a Christmas time scene involving Radar and Chas. It's the one where Radar brings Charles a childhood hat. The part that the cable ch's cut, what leads up to the gift, builds up to the moment and lets the viewers understand how important it really was.

You're not likely to get coplete episodes from your local affiliate, either -- the syndication copies of "MASH" that have been distributed by 20th Century Fox are pre-edited, and this has been the case since as far back as the late eighties. The current syndicated version of "MASH" runs just under 22 minutes per episode, which requires that 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes be cut from each episode.

If you want to see the complete episodes, the best bet is the DVDs.

The editing happens on just about all older TV shows that are shown in syndication or on cable.

It's not just older episodes it's every episode in Sydication. Let's face it Syndication is not about art or integrity it's about the bottom line. It stinks, but at least with MASH you can get the unedited episodes. Check out the first seasons of The Coby Show and Roseanne and you'll realize that they are using the syndication episodes on the DVD. What a shame!

I'll give a huge thumbs up for the MASH DVD's. Not a lot of extras such as commentary...but the transfers are great and every episode is the full original version. Highly recommended if you're a MASH fan.
