mash-Ups

Since most* (not all) but most have a top40 element
(either sound, current hit, feel or vibe) ... I am
strongly CURIOUS to know why more stations are
NOT EMBRACING the mashups.... in various ways,
such as a sunday afternoon show; a 2@2 hour -
from 2pm - 3pm all mashups (one day/all week);
a nightly example: 10 @ 7 ( say if the station is 107_FM ) etc, etc
and either be 10 songs in 7 minutes, 10 different 'mashups' at 7pm, (etc etc)...

The novelity comes and goes, when a blend is created...some are soo
AWESOME they will be a custom mix to the airwaves of a particular station,
However, with the "internet" and interns whom you can put to work to
create a weekly library - brings me back to my original inquiry:

Why aren't more stations all over the mashups ?? ( say an all #!&-ed up weekend)
for the more edgy/chr's , or a long weekend as a so nice play it twice
(at the same time ) weekend...

YES, I Know it is WORK
Yes, I UNDERSTAND is LESS work to "click" on playlist to shuffle the current 15 songs
being played - lol- and
YES, I know if it is NOT Sponsored , why bother...

Taking into considerations the above three reasons, what is the hang up
on more stations not embracing the mashup..

IS there a legal issue w/ the songs, as where you may play Pitbull (example) but
when sampled w/ Daft Punk ( it may screw up some numbers, plays per week, etc etc )

I am hear to learn hope some one has some info.

I'd guess that legal issues would be a problem for some mash-ups. That, and maybe there's a reluctance to take a chance and play a remix or mash-up? That's too bad... because some mash-ups actually sound better than either song by itself in my opinion.

Two of my favorites of all time:

Children of the Sandstorm (Robert Miles and Darude)
Diamonds (Midnight City Remix)

Im guessing its legal issues as well..... The NOVA stations in Australia used to play mashups, but they dont anymore

Confusion about "legal issues"

As the station is permitted...scratch that,
THEY DO PLAY :::: RIHANNA (?sp) / and
will be gangnam style/ beiber, etc -
>And if it jams with old aerosmith ....
is THAT the issue???

OR if it is ataylor swift/ ADELE / one direction mashup
...they already play all three anyways, what is
"the big deal" to play all at once ???

I am sure they 'sneeek' a few in during mix shows,
anyway... HOW >> is it different to have a
Jay-Z beat over a carly rae jepsen song ??

KPLZ plays mash-ups every once in a while as a morning show bit, but that's a good question. I'm sure they still have the ones they've played in the past.

the era of the mashup has come and gone.

two issues: really good mashups were/are few and far between. there isn't enough quality product to support something long-term.

also, don't underestimate the "i wanna hear what i know" factor. there's a reason why most chr mixshows are really simply the regular versions of songs beatmixed and not true remixes. chr listeners want to hear the hits as they know them. that's why the few mashup features popped up were mostly at alternative, where the listeners were a little more open-minded.

Thanks for the suggestion about alternative radio, marconis. I just opened up another tab and did a Google search for "alternative radio mash ups". This is what I found:

http://gotradiomashups.rad.io/

GotRadio apparently has an Internet station that is all mash ups 24/7.

Mash-ups are an internet sensation. However, playing mash-ups on the radio would be suicide. There's some good ones but there are lots of bad ones. Playing a few during a specialty show or showcased on a morning show would be more preferable for the airwaves, but not integrated into stations' playlists.

I disagree SDH:

not "suicide" since . . .no one else is doing it..
It would be different - and iF it is a "bad" mashup,
yea BAD Move...
OR if u pLay a mashup w/ a current Justin Beiber
with a 70s classic (bad) ...but what about a
Carly Rae Jepsen (+) Psy 'gangnam' is great..
and while Thinking of this post/thread - Virgin Radio 99.9,
was playing each song (independently) back to back...
>
soo why not at the same time???

Re-Visiting this topic....
OK, why don't stations play mash ups??

in regular rotations....?
when there was a successful mash up
in the past ( say a decade ago) it
was picked up....
When a 2010, 2011, 2012 song is an OBVIOUS rip-off/sample
of a 1980s hit ( take your pick) the mash up
is beggging to mashed up.....

when a "kid" posts a fun mashup to his fb.wall
or when a club dj posts it...and it picks up steam,
it would be in the listen to my mix click here ...Why not
place it on the station, in regular rotation??

furthermore, if one station plays it...on a whim,
say in a mix show...they get that WOW factor...
or the "credit" for playing the remix
( as the general public calls it a remix or mash together) . . .

example: fun106's gaga/journey or when my supervisior
told me about call me maybe vs gangman style..
I impressed my co-workers..and they hear thaat mix
when carly rae's song is on...and thaaat mix ISNt overpowering...
these two songs . . .(above example) are very viable
blends that would meet an hot a/c (gaga journey) and
a chr ( carly rae and psy)

example: hypnotize BIGGIE beat and the lyrics of another song...
would NOT work as people would think it is a rip or to quote
kids today, fail..as they would want to hear biggie..
or perhaps to lead to confusion , as someone may think that
IS the new song...BUT besides those two small points..

stations would BENEFIT and ...since radio is a bizzz....
give your listeners and advertisers to invest in your
station, as you would stand out....

NOT saying play 85% mashups....lol
maybe one every two. hours...which leads
to a flat rate of ten per day...
and dont play the same three where people have a
vibe....i bet its coming up next..lol
and, when u play it ..be cool play it, hint at the other
station dont have that in their library, and move on....
and since Im giving strict guidelines to HOW to
make this work..lol, keep the 2 songs you blend together,
(done by a professional) not youtube..lol, but of the two
songs mashed up . . .don't make on be bowie on your
current CHR /conversely don't have a country mash up
on your oldies station...
make sure it would be two or three songs you would normally
play within 24 hour time frame.

-it worked for the jiveBunnies...and that was before ' the internet'. lol
