Mason Dixon Out

I recall Scott Walker (not the singer Scott Walker) when I lived in Orlando, up to 1982, WLOF.

As for Mason, my amusing story was from years ago at a MacDill Airfest where he had an appearance. I happened to stumble upon a "pirate" signal on the low end of the FM dial prior to entering the base, and it turns out he was using it as the audio link. He became very upset that I a) discovered it b) asked him about it c) had the audio and frequency displayed on my handheld scanner. LOL!

Ever hear the phrase what goes around comes around....It really does work.
Mason is way beyond the normal run of the mill egomaniac's in this industry.
He gives it a new ugly head.
He has treated people poorly for many decades, and just now will start
receiving his paybacks. Maybe this will be a learning curve he will pay attention to.

Like him or not, Mason is a guy who has managed to survive--and prosper--in a business that continues to get more difficult with each passing year. And he's done it by staying in one market.

Granted, he's done it by hurting a lot of others along the way (both personally and professionally it seems) but the guy at least deserves a little more respect than he's getting on this board. The path he chose to get him where he is is in many ways a sad one; but as they say, that's business. And... that's radio.

I guess nobody knows how WRBQ can improve, be more like WOGL, and spend less. Oh well.

from what i have read and heard about the new pd - scott walker - he is very good at getting the best out of his staff and he knows the format very, very well.

with the NEW PD,will I notice a slight change in the music on Q 105? I think it should be 33% 60s,33%70s and 33% 80s! Cheers DJ LoveTrain 1620am WBUL 8) ???

Really?

Based on what?

Correct. Through backstabbing. He learned first hand from Randy Kabrick how to manipulate a GM and SPIN things to his advantage. Or was it the other way around. ;D

I was in LA when KHJ flipped. I remember Robert W. Morgan, the Real Don Steele, Sam Riddle, Dave Diamond, Johnny Williams, and I guess too many names to remember when you have 7 airshifts daily. It certainly was a great station and I listened all summer "up and down the Malibu beaches". I don't see why all this bickering is going on about Mason's character. I heard John Rook was rough to work for back in the day of KQV in Pittsburgh. He even had directives on which doors to use. I know cause I was related to someone connected to KQV and was a mascot for awhile. Now he is a legend. It seems the topic should be what direction will WRBQ be taking. Will WSJT flip. They played Clapton this morning. Maybe he is "blues", but hardly elevator jazz.

Does anybody have anything concrete to add, or this just "Let's trash Mason " hour?

Before anybody asks why I dump on Mark Larsen and defend Mason who is probably just as conservative, this particular post is not about Mason's politics, but I thought about the future of WRBQ with a new management philosophy.

Expect more 60's and less 70's on Q-105.

Really?

Based on what?

Based on what CBS wants to do with their oldies/classic hits stations and what Mason wants to do with his oldies/classic hits station. Mason was trying to relive the Q-105 glory days of the late 70s and early 80s. CBS seems to focus more on the late 60s and early 70s, like most oldies stations do today.

As for a Cleveland Wheeler reunion, forget about it. Cleveland can't stand corporate control, he can't stand Mason, and he won't get what little CBS would offer. Sounds fun, but Q-105 is in slash and burn mode, not hiring mode. I can't answer the question of how do you spend less and improve more. If the recent history of radio has taught us anything, the two don't go hand-in-hand.

Certainly personality is what has seperated WRBQ from WXGL. I assume WRBQ rates higher. It does 12+. Would CBS be going down this road? Why not fire them all and flip to "Jack"? It's not what I'd like, but Tampa has no Variety Hits station, although after long exposure to 'BOB" in Pittsburgh, I'm not clear on what it is supposed to be. Variety Hits just sounds like 60's, 70's , and 80's with no jocks.------big whoop.

I think Cleveland is getting tired of the Mountains

I don't think that is necessarily true. Yes there are more '60s on KRTH and WOGL, but look at Scott Walker's recent station: WOMC in Detroit. Their playlist looks identical to Q105's. WOMC is even playing some '80s. Now take a look at WCBS-FM and WOCL next door in Orlando. They have moved so far forward that they are even playing Bon Jovi.

One thing that is keeping Q105 from reliving the glory days of the '80s is Cox. "The Eagle" and "The Point" have the field so crowded that it's hard to get a Bon Jovi in edgewise! But really, I think you only look as far as WOMC as to what Q105 will sound like under Scottt Walker.

Given that the Eagle has 2 jocks and the Point has 3, at least I think so ( and I assume nights are VT'ed)--------I'm amazed that WRBQ with Mason , without Mason, with 60's or without 60's wouldn't eat them alive. WRBQ is so far ahead of the COX product now that I just hope they don't ruin it.

I'm not saying I won't like it, actually I'm looking forward to it. I wasn't thrilled about the 70s shift a few months abck (although the ratings seem to prove otherwise), but I'm more than willing to give this a chance. I just hope once Scott goes with a format, Q-105 sticks with it. They've had too many shifts in music from mid-60's to mid-80's the last couple of years.

That's also why I think WJQB missed a chance to carve a niche as a real oldies staion, and not the classic hits that Scott Shannon is pumping out. I like the local morning show, but content and signal-wise JQB comes up short here.

I wish WRBQ does like WCBS 101.1 did, have an A to Z week! Cheers 8)

MsMusic - My experience with Mr. Dixon was a long way beyond just kind of tough to work for. I witnessed things I can't and won't put in a public forum but it was a lot more than hot-lining a jock type of stuff.

I wish ill will on no one. And I shouldn't even post this stuff. But someday I'll feel the need to tell my story. It might be something no one ever reads but at least I'll get it out. And I hope, at some point, Mason becomes a better person.

I worked with Mason as a sales person and he was never but pleasant with me. It is ashame that some had bad experiences. But for the most part, he was always good to the sales staff..... I can't say I've heard that about MJ. I have heard horror stories about the way he treated his sales staff. (The same people selling his endorsements etc)
