Massive cuts at Clear Channel

Yesterday, it was announced that Clear Channel made massive cuts in the programming department at stations around the country. I didn't see anything about Las Vegas in the trades. Maybe I missed it. Does anyone know if cuts happened at our Las Vegas cluster?

There were no cuts at CCLV. Las Vegas is considered a model market for CC because there are so few employees. CC is trying to get the rest of their clusters to become more like LV.

The problem I see with that strategy is that CC is dominating in the ratings in many of their markets while they only have one successful station in their model market (KSNE). But CC has so much debt I guess this is the risk they are willing to take.

Wow, JayF, is you are correct (which I have never known you to be wrong), that is a really sad statement! Clear Channel Las Vegas is the model cluster for the rest of the country? They have only one successful station and that is mostly due to the fact that they are the heritage stand alone AC station in Las Vegas. If Sunny had a direct competitor, they probably wouldn't lose to the new AC but they wouldn't be top 3. In fact, I know of one radio station in Las Vegas (at another cluster in town) that is considering going AC to compete with Sunny. This cluster hopes to take just enough shares from Sunny in order to ensure one of their stations a top spot. We'll see if this really happens.... But if this does happen, Clear Channel would be in serious trouble with no top rated station. Cause I don't see KWNR and KPLV turning it around anytime soon. Both stations are in direct battles with stations that believe in local talent. KPLV and KWNR will never win against stations like KLUC, KVEG, and KCYE who I believe are doing good radio with a solid staff/management.

By the way, I have spent a little time listening to both KPLV and KWNR lately to see if their new OM and new PDs have made an effort to improve their products.

KPLV sounds so vanilla. It sounds like they’re trying to be more HOT AC to hurt Mix based on their music and branding. The name “My” screams Hot AC or even AC. And they will never win with the Phoenix based John Jay and Rich. Syndicated morning shows on music stations have never worked in Vegas with the exception of Howard Stern. Cat Thomas at KLUC and Sherita at KVEG and their teams must be getting a kick out of this mess.

As for KWNR, I thought the last morning show was terrible (the guy who went to Phoenix) and the new morning guy (who is also the PD) would have to be an improvement. But I believe I am wrong. There is no chemistry between JoJo and Tracy. Honestly, it sounds awkward. Obviously, it’s next to impossible to put two people together that have never worked together and expect the “magic”. That’s why they should have done the right thing and hired a team. But with Clear Channel’s financial situation, this is not possible. Justin Chase (KCYE) and his team have to be pretty proud of what they have accomplished.

I just feel bad for the folks at Clear Channel all over the country and here in Las Vegas. There are a lot of very talented and passionate people in that building. But their company probably makes it tough for their people to feel comfortable enough to be creative. Their too busy worried about their job.
