Massive Job Cuts KGTV San Diego News Dept. - Anchors, Reporters

I spent 25 years in broadcast news. On the one hand, it's sad to see my colleagues losing their jobs left and right. On the other hand, I find little need to watch local newscasts anymore, when anything I need to know is either posted to social media (often faster than it hits the airwaves), or shows up on my browser's home page the moment I open it.

I watch KGTV/ABC 10 quite a bit. Wale, Aaron Dickens and Vanessa Paz are still anchoring. Does anyone know when they're leaving? When I was working in television news, once an on-air talent was notified they were being let go, they were immediately pulled off the air. Any on-air promos of them were also yanked right away.

Kudos to Scripps for doing that. I wish more radio/TV management would allow that. The vast majority of broadcasting professionals are just that . professional, and are respectful of their employer and wouldn't even think about going rogue. Besides with the shrinking number of broadcasting jobs and the competition in trying to find one, no future employer would want to hire someone who went rogue at their previous employment (a sure way to end your career). And when you think about it, most other companies when laying off, will give the employee an end date in advance after receiving notice to avoid the stress of a sudden job loss without any notice. It's about having respect for your employees.

It will be interesting to see how News 10 fills the weekday anchor chair when Wale leaves, which could be next week with the beginning of April.

So, it's been a few weeks since the laid-off talent left. Weekday 5pm, 6pm and 7pm newscasts are now routinely solo-anchored. Weekends, one anchor does both news & weather-- and often there is no live reporter in the field. Really makes KGTV look like a small-market station, especially since their main competitor (KFMB) still has two news anchors on most weekday newscasts.
