Massive KOOI Upgrade?

Some of you are better at looking this stuff up than I am -
KOOI 106.5 is kicking ___ in the metroplex. At first I thought it was skip, but it is still there - no crosstalk from 106.7 in Plano - perfect stereo. Did they upgrade? If that is any indication of signal strength in the area, they may pick up some listeners in Southern and Western suburbs like Mesquite. Their signal in Plano was at least as strong as KLAK and KMAD.

It's the waether. Everytime the weather is spring like, KOOI and KDOK from Tyuler literally blast their way in here. Which is a blessing. KDOK is the best oldies station in Texas, bar none.

Hey gang!

Just wanted to jump on here and say Thanks for your kind words about KDOK.
Live and local radio...what a concept! I'm certainly proud to be a part of it.

Happy Holidays!

KOOI is something like 1500' AGL on their stick, IIRC. They're the tallest in East Texas. I think they've got a rated range of ~80 miles from their site in Mount Selman (about 10 miles north of Jacksonville).

I have listened to them in Dallas, as well. As far as upgrades go, I'm not aware of any. They've always been that strong. I've heard them as far east as just west of West Monroe, LA. Access.1 got a flamethrower when they bought that one.

Of course the big question is, WHAT are they going to do with it?

Do with what? Nobody said anything about any format changes. It's AC.

Ecactly the point. Since when does the fact that it happens to be an AC or any other format have anything to do with what happens it the format in tne future?h

Why should they change? Good music, great localism, their own jocks from the sound of it. A refreshing change from the professionalized cookie cutter formats in the metroplex. Local radio with just enough rough edges to be interesting. I wish they would go up an additional 500 feet to make it in here better.

Believe it or not, some radio stations have been the same format for many years, and never plan on changing it. What is the point in going around saying "WHAT are they going to do with it?"

My answer to you:.... They're going to run it.

That's right. They're going to run the station. Are they going to flip formats? No. In the future? Doubtful.

So, WHAT are they going to do with it?... They're going to run it.

There has been a lot of talk on the Texas board about KOOI. It was always the heritage East Texas AC station, operated for many years by one of Texas' premier broadcasters, Dudley Waller. When Waller sold it a couple of years ago to Access.1, he retained a smaller station in Jacksonville, dropped its smooth jazz format, and programmed it the same way as when he had KOOI. He was also able to bring a couple of the station's better known air personalities over to the newly AC formatted "Breeze." The new owners made changes to KOOI's programming, not the least of which was making it more upbeat and playing more currents, but many of those currents were questionable fits for a firmly entrenched station like Sunny. Remember that we're talking about a target audience in Tyler, Jacksonville and hundreds of smaller communities in a very conservative part of the state. It's been proven many times that what works in Dallas or Houston doesn't necessarily work there. Beyond the music, Access.1 showed a lack of direction in promotion, ran through a program director in rather short order and earlier this year blew out a talented morning team of two veterans of East Texas radio. The point about formats really does apply in this case, in that under Access.1's ownership KOOI actually has changed formats---twice, and now they're closer to the soft AC they were when Waller owned the station.

Yes, but how well?
