Does anyone know what happened to 107.7 DJ Master Jay? He was their best talent and was the only one who really sounded like he knew the artists (besides their mix show dj's), and for some reason is off the air. Is he on vaca? Is he somewhere else? I suspect he was a big part of what they did on the programming side seeing almost every feature on 107.7 was a spinoff of Mater Jay's other station WJMN in Boston. I even noticed that there morning show copied a description of WJMN's morning show verbatim when I was looking at the web pages today! (I can see they put alot of effort into being original).

Anyone know what the deal is?
 
As a company employee, I'll tell you what I'd tell anybody who called up and asked. He's no longer with the station. Even if I knew more, which I don't, it would not be appropriate for me to share on a public chat board. Yes, he is a talented guy and I wish him well.

As a former GM of mine once said, "Some of the best ideas are ones that aren't original." If borrowing from a successful market model were such a taboo, then the Drake format of the late 60s, Howard Stern's syndication, Lite FM, researched playlists and a host of catchy promotions would never have caught on beyond where they started. The ideas that work should serve as models. It's not brain surgery or heavy lifting, but radio is definitely more perspiration than inspiration. That's the case with most things in life. Churning out a consistently effective product involves getting it right around the clock, not just a few stellar moments of creativity from the ground up.

Wasn't he voicetracked??
This is a small station in a small market, why would Master J wanna be there when he works at Jam'n 94.5 in Boston? I was driving out to Foxwoods on Monday morning and was listening to the 107.7 morning show. It sounds horrible! They had no idea where they wanted to go with the show, not to mention for a station that plays hip hop they are all over the place with the music and the jocks don't sound like they know the format. To compare this station to Jam'n 94.5 in Boston would be a disgrace because nothing they do sounds like WJMN! They can copy stuff from the website and put it on their morning page all they want because they will never be any better than what they are right now. The signal is garbage I lost the station on I-95 before Old Saybrook!
 
He was there, mostly live, for a couple of years. Their tower's next to Foxwoods, east of the center of population but not the rimshotter status of a couple of competitors. They make money, study the market, have their fair share of listeners, get good response at their many local appearances and the staff works its asses off. That's the observation of a guy who does some work for their sister station.

I once told a Hartford PD I worked for how awesome it was to be on a station that could reach millions of people. He replied, "It doesn't matter whether you're here or Skowhegan, Maine." The bottom line is simple. You're communicating with people on a professional level. Oh yeah... it's about what works, not what we think "sounds good."
