Matlock on WKYC

Did anyone see the Andy Griffith legal show that preempted most of NBC's Thursday Night lineup last night? It's talk of social media and even the national press (Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly and the Huffington Post are among the sites that picked up on the change).

The station GM said the actor was snubbed from the "In Memoriam" segment from the Oscars and aired the movie as a tribute.

They're going to air another Matlock movie this Thursday night. Who's watching it?

This is far from the first time a local station has done this.

Every so often, 3/5/19 - not so much 8 - will preempt network programming for local syndicated stuff, especially if the network is showing reruns.

Primary reason...prime time local ad $$.

It's not that big of a deal...it's happened before, and will happen again.

I agree with you. 5 has preempted ABC programming before with (ironically enough) Matlock. I remember one of those movies aired instead of Saving Private Ryan following the Janet/Justin/Super Bowl debacle in '04.

8 used to preempt and/or move a lot of CBS programming too when they were an affiliate. One of the most well-known moves was Murphy Brown airing at 11:30 after Newscenter 8 at 11, pushing David Letterman to Midnight.

Locally, to me, it wasn't a big deal, but to many, especially across social media, it became a hot item on the heals of NBC losing out to Univision nationally, dropping to 5th place in the 18-49 demo. NBC's poor performance is pretty much the talk of the national media landscape, and those websites saw "Matlock" on 3 as a punch in the face to the Peacock.

Plus, fans of "The Office" were upset of the preemption too and voiced their concerns with 3.

Unless I am not mistaken, doesn't WKYC only have rights to the two hour movies as I thought at one point WEWS had rights to the hour long version:

As 0f 2007 WEWS did run the 60 minute version as late night filler:

Yeah but usually unless it is for Billy Graham they do it in June,July or August or on a Saturday night as since at least 2006 WKYC has ran the matlock movie at least 2 time a year. I guess this is big because NBC is in 5th place, for the first Hour matlock was able to keep up with the office and beat 1600 penn, and it was a 21 year old movie which originally aired ironically on NBC.

8 rarely preempted primetime network programming either with CBS or FOX. The only time they do is on the rare occasion they win the OTA rights to a primetime cable Browns game.

5 has done it occasionally in recent years with their local town hall and "building better neighborhoods" specials.

19 does it occasionally for St. Jude specials.

But as I said before, situations like this are usually done for $$, and not necessarily about "sending a message" to the network.

I do not think WKYC was sending a message, even though the broadcast community has shaken their head and in some way's WKYC is a laughing stock and in other way's is a trendsetter in addition they got ALOT of PR, but it was done for money as they keep all the spots after paying for the licensing fees which I assume was done quite a while ago. I wonder what else they have the rights to that they can air?

Probably a lot regarding Matlock. WKYC must have a big library of the show on what they have.

I didn't think 3 was sending a message, but again as I mentioned, the preemptions came around the same time NBC's getting bad press for its ratings woes.

You're right vjm, 8 never preempted primetime except for sports. I was trying to find a good example of network preemptions in Cleveland.

My theory is that because of crappy ratings, WKYC owed clients a boatload of makegoods. Figuring that a showing of Matlock wouldn't do much worse than reruns of NBC shows, they ran that instead of the network. Given that you have about 4 times as many of avails in local programming versus network, they could use that to clear out the backlog.
