Matt Allen? Dave Barber?? Dan Yorke???

Just when you think Dan York CAN'T get any more full of himself, he proves you wrong.

For the record...

For the record: I've NEVER thought Dan couldn't-get-more-full-of-himself.

On Thursday, he told listeners that the people at NBC10 News "WANT TO BE DAN YORKE."

The people at NBC10 News want to be Dan Yorke? He was really delusional enough to say that? I just love radio nutjobs. They make me feel sane.

I heard him talking about wanting to take over the saturday Public affairs show for them.

Almost NO talk of HD radio.
The new door stop, in case you have more doors than AM Stereo receivers...

In the dozens of seminars and presentations last weekend, HD Radio only came up in discussion once - and it was during a "new media workshop" panel presentation about WiMax! Just a blurb about there being over 1,600 HD Radio stations on AM and FM (which would equate to about 0.25 listener per station)...

RIP Tim Russert

This is really sad.
Tim Russert is dead.
Heart attack, 58.
Collapsed today while recording voiceovers for Sunday's "Meet The Press."

Viewers came to know of his son Luke, who'd just graduated from BC.
Today was Russert's first day back at work after family vacation in Italy to celebrate.
Sad irony for this to happen on Father's Day weekend.

The mayor of Buffalo ordered city buildings to lower flags to half-staff.

Lots of people in radio can take a lesson from Russert's work ethic.
NOBODY prepped more.
And he'd post-mortem work after-the-fact. Aircheck review, what a concept.

And the-work-you-saw was only one of his jobs.
Russert was NBC/Washington's "player-coach," the Bureau Chief.

He reinvented Sunday morning public affairs shows, previously staid.
He MADE "Meet The Press" appointment viewing, by doing what radio promos should, asking-for-the-order:
"IF IT'S SUNDAY, IT'S MEET THE PRESS."

This is personally sobering too.
Russert was my age, and he-and-I arrived in Washington the same year.
He was as-affable off-air as on.
When I’d encounter him at an event, he’d remark about something he had heard on WTOP (which I managed at the time).

I learned of Tim Russert's passing because I had The Dan Yorke Show on in the car.
Or should I say "despite?"

He ever-so-briefly interrupted an excruciatingly-arcane drone about Twin River financing, to allude to a breaking story.
BUT HE DIDN'T SAY WHAT THE STORY WAS.
Said something-would-be-coming-up-soon...BUT NOT ABOUT WHAT.
That is really sad.
When I pushed the button to Sean Hannity, the first thing I heard was Tom Brokaw's voice.

Holland-

Recently you posted something about "Hobby Horse" topics. Tonight at 6:30 PM during the news hour Matt Allen is talking about IMMIGRATION! Now there's a fresh topic! WJAR NBC 10 is their partner and he's talking immigration for the 6,789th time. Who is running this operation? News talk radio, an icon in news dies prematurly and Matt talks immigration. They run NBC 10 at 6. Let's go back to Beacon Mutual. It was unlistenable.

"LOCAL, LOCAL, LOCAL..."

NESN's Red Sox guys just bumped-into an inning-ending break with a Russert tribute!

They found time IN A BASEBALL GAME...but all Yan could offer is a mumbled tease to-the-effect-that there's a big developing story, "not about national security," and not say WHAT...sending THOUSANDS of index fingers to channel-surf.

I felt like I was in a training video, when the-very-FIRST-thing-I-heard on Hannity was BROKAW'S VOICE.

What a child you are Cook. Competing with Chatty Patty and WPRO is hurting - WHJJ is gaining post??
How many more times will you bring this back! Most times you post here, Haynes is laughing at you.

It's an ancient chinese art, and everybody knew their part...

As ANYONE who watches CNBC in the morning knows, he spells his name "Haines."

And, when he worked at WPRO, I NEVER saw him laughing.

Holland, what do consultants say when it's more entertaining to listen to the talk hosts bicker and throw barbs among themselves, than their regular programing ?

Sally

What does it mean to Homer & Marge?

Important question, but flawed premise.
WHO SAYS it's more entertaining?

This self-absorbed, self-amused, self-indulgent blah-blah-blah would be eroding listening almost-as-fast-as it measurably is EVEN WITHOUT iPod, iPhone, Internet, Sirius/XM, an other new-tech competitors.

Not-talking-about what-PEOPLE-care-about -- instantly and conspicuously -- is programming suicide.

Right now, this hour, the #1 and #2 titles on Amazon.com are Tim Russert's two books.
Vox populi, baby.

This compelling story is a CLINIC in stop-what-you're-doing and "take-ownership-of" the moment.
Many listeners' wireless gizmos were telling them what The News Station wasn't.

Many of Talk Radio's heaviest users are people-Russert's/my-age with fathers-the-same-age-as my dad/Big Russ.
What more-compelling, more-poignant Father's Day story could fate have presented?

I was just shocked that Matt Allen was not all over the Russert passing. "What do you remember about watching him?" "How important are TV news people in your life?" Doesn't management go over topics with these people? He was doing immigration. Their TV partner is a NBC affiliate for god's sake! Bill Rappele (sic) has interviewed him. Get him on to talk about that. Even Bristol county diary keepers can see NBC and Meet the Press. Immigration in Newport? No wonder he only makes $40,000.00. At that he's overpaid!

Pick one: READ the newspaper on-air...or WRITE IT on-air.

Get a doctor on the phone! An internist or cardiac doc, with a thick Rho Dylahn accent. Tell the stunned Russert-age Baby Boomers who contribute the lion's share of talk radio AQH how-someone-who-just-passed-a-stress-test could keel over.

Get Jack Reed on the phone! He was sufficiently-available to weigh-in that he found his way INTO THE BUILDING at NBC10, LATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON, to talk about how-it-felt-to-be-on "Meet The Press."

Properly approached, Rappleye himself could've been a wrinkle. Having-recently-become-the-story vis-a-vis NBC10's ombudsman deeming that his interview with the governor had crossed-the-line, a deft interviewer could have, gently, asked Rappleye about "the line" that wall-to-wall testimonials are praising Russert's sense-of. Maybe Rappleye couldn't/wouldn't comment, but MAKE THE CALL.

Heck, even the-most-obvious-cliche -- interviewing-a-corporate-suit -- would've localized the story. Get well-spoken NBC10 GM Lisa Churchville on the phone, to talk about durable local ratings for "Meet The Press," and to recall encountering Russert on his several recent RI visits.

As we're (still) seeing in continuing coverage on several channels, suits are second-best to familiar faces, and interviewing-someone-who-works-ON-CAMERA, on-the-station-we-saw-Russert's-work, could have given listeners A FACE ON THE RADIO. Get Patrice or Gene to talk about having-met-Russert, and how-it-feels-when a viewer approaches them, on the street, as so many did to Russert, to remark about something that had aired.

"I will tell you this..."

I hear A LOT of radio in my travels. Pick a market, any market. Sitting-in-a-hotel-room, listening, first-thing-in-the-morning (and isn't THAT a snapshot of The Glamorous Consulting Life?), I can tell you what time the newspaper got delivered to the radio station. Suddenly, they stop talking about what's-happening-NOW and start talking-about-what-happened-yesterday, when the newspaper went to bed.

One common trait of conspicuously successful News/Talk stations is that they WRITE the newspaper, on-air, the-day-before. They get someone to say something SO compelling that, late-in-the-afternoon, when the newspaper is sweating deadline, the quote is irresistable.

The doctor idea is a very good one! Plus, it zeros in right at your demo.

News/Talk 101

Get the bishop on the phone! Russert wore his faith on his sleeve. He made being Catholic cool. Ask the bishop to offer an on-air prayer. Can you hear it? "Heavenly Father...." THAT'S Salty Brine radio. In our heavily-Catholic corner-of-the-world, PEOPLE DRIVING would've blessed themselves.

THE RETIRED-SCHOOLTEACHER NUN WHO FIRST ASSIGNED YOUNG TIM RUSSERT TO THE SCHOOL NEWSPAPER LIVES IN FALL RIVER, as we learned from NBC10.

Call WBEN/Buffalo, "the WPRO of Western New York," and ask a host or news guy there "HOW ARE YOUR CALLERS REMEMBERING BUFFALO'S FAVORITE SON?"

Holland-

Another good point. The Today Show did a two hour tribute. I just turned on WPRO and Matt is still talking about immigration in "Only Ville". How many diaries do ya think they get?

"Blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah..."

Washington Post columnist Marc Fisher, announcing last month that the paper had discontinued its radio column:

“Radio, shedding talent as fast as it loses audience, is rapidly becoming irrelevant to the younger generation. Yet most Americans still listen to something for much of the day,” he observed.

Recalling unforgettable voices he heard on-air growing up, he still thinks “Radio could be the way into those ears, but only if it invests in creating compelling reasons to be there, only if it grabs hold of us the way the voices of past decades connected to the loves, pains and dreams of young listeners. As always, the future lies in the past.”

Holland, you are right on target. And so is JointChinese. Today (Sat) Matt was talking immigration during the 10am
hour. Than when Tony from Narragansett called to agree with Matt 100% about the topic. And to say how wonderful his show is, I turned the dial. That b/s can only go so far... I don't know how old Matt is. But I think he is around 30 years old. He prides himself on "the local angle". But missed out on a chance to shine. He however is a BIG fan of Michael Savage. If something happened to him. He would be all over the story. Or if another Transformers movie debuted. It would of been the topic for all of his show...........

Allen said he didn't want people calling about Russert 'throwing Bombs'. He wasn't in the mood. By the way, you media boys don't get it! Russert is Beltway. People are already saying ENOUGH. You boys are out of touch. Take a look at Allens Saturday ratings . They speak for themselves. I detect a little envy amongst Mr Barber and Mr Cooke.       ::) ::) ::)
