For what it's worth...This is GREAT news for whatever station is able to pick them up. Matt and Jay are two of the very best and somebody, if they're smart, is about to see a rebirth of their radio station. As for WABB, you'd better hope that station is a LONG way away from Mobile. This is exactly the kind of thing that brings down heritage stations.

Guys, if you're reading this...good luck. We'll all be watching to see whose rear end you kick next.

You are right! They are awesome people, as well as kick ass talent. I had the pleasure of 'almost' working with them, and many times I regretted my decision not to join them. I'm curious of the circumstances, but I know that they must have greener pastures to go to. Knock 'em dead guys!

I recall them as both being stand up guys, although I remember getting Matt a little upset at me when he first came to town. I deserved it, I always wanted to apologize for being an ass. Well, maybe he'll read this.

Good luck to you guys.

I am guessing that either the station will be well outside of their non-compete clause radius (usually meaning no stations in Mobile, Pensacola or Biloxi) or they are going to have to sit out until their WABB contract runs out.

They will have to wait...but not so long that they will be forgotten. Just long enough for it to be big news when they reappear. If I was running a radio station in Mobile I would look very closely at what happened in Birmingham when WZZK decided they didn't want Pati & Dollar Bill anymore. Once they showed up on WDXB it was all over for WZZK. People had tried and tried to topple that station and nothing worked until that happened. Now they're paying out the rear end for an all talk morning show that very likely will kill the rest of their day. If they had kept Pati & Dollar Bill they would still be the kings of country in Birmingham. There's a fine line between keeping your sound fresh and flipping the boat over. I guarantee you that Mobile's radio listeners are MUCH more loyal to Matt & Jay than they are to WABB and when they show up somewhere else it will take a miracle for WABB to maintain anything close to what they currently have.
You can't beat satellite with music. Does anybody know a person that is loyal to a tv station? No...they're loyal to the shows on that station. It's the same with radio but because of the different formats some people get fooled into thinking otherwise. Without great personalities that make an emotional connection traditional radio will lose to satellite. With great local personalities we can keep satellite in a corner.

Ok so i'm reading the posts and seeing alot of people say that wabb will be hurt by the loss of matt and jay, first of all the hurt began about three books back as the mornign show was consistently going down in the numbers and every other airshift continued to get better and had better numbers....isn't it supposed to be the other way around....shouldn't the morning show be the anchor to the radio station??? Bottom line is sometimes dj's become old and out of touch with the audience. In this case I think wabb is going to be just fine bringing in new blood to make the station stronger all the way through the lineup. I think instead of bashing the station for the loss I think we should give credit to the pd jammer for getting in there a few years back and really making wabb a winner again, and I have no doubt that he will continue his winning ways with a new morning show that will blow mobile away. so to the fans of matt and jay....which seem to include bitter ex rivals.....calm down and watch what happens....but i guess when you get stomped in the ratings you have nothing better to do but bash the station and rave about how good matt and jay WERE, just had to caps that key word. To the staff at wabb keep up the great work and winning ways....to the haters keep hatin!

A few books doesn't mean the end of a good morning show. Everybody has slumps and when it's a morning show with a good track record like Matt & Jay the slump is quite often the result of issues surrounding them. When you consider the investment that has been made in a show like theirs it seems wise to try a little harder to get whatever problems there may be out of the way. Sometimes that takes looking at your own ego. I don't know if that's the case here or not but I do know that Matt & Jay are a very talented team with a ton of love in the market and more potential to hurt WABB than a $200,000 marketing budget in the hands of any competitor. Not hating, just saying.
