Max Kinkel gone already???

I recently heard about the addition of Max Kinkel to WVOS. Last week I tuned in a couple times to listen, but there was no Max. This week I found the same. Once in a while Justin Case would drop in with school closings, but no Max. Today I went to the WVOS website, and there is no longer any mention of Kinkel. Does anyone know what's going on here? Has he decided to depart the Catskills already?

Kinkel was/is a major market talent. I'm surprised he even parked his car in the WVOS parking lot, let alone do a show there. This is a guy who's worked NY and Chicago, afterall. Couldn't figure out what he was doing in the Borscht Belt when he could work just about any medium or large market in the U.S.

andrew, what strange way to come at it. seems to me that he's just doing radio. what does market size matter? mayb its where he wants to live. a good station is a good station. and they happen to sound really good. they should be commended for getting him at all.

Interesting post- back in the 90's, Harry Gregor decided to move Bob Miller off morning drive and brought Max in to take his place, on CZX-Fm in poughkeepsie (might have still been 98 FaMe??). Well, ol' max lasted 2 weeks and got himself canned. Miller took back am drive...Everybody thought the same thing, major market talent from CBS fm in poughkeepsie?? I understand that he had been recently let go by CBS-FM at the time.. nothing against Max, but if ya screw up doesn't matter where u are.... ;D

Anyone else remember this???

warm590, broadcasting live from Seattle... ;D

I wish that Max will go back to CBS-FM to do the "New York Radio Greats" show on Sunday nights to do another shot. I've never listened to WVOS-FM on 95.9, because the station was splattered by WPKF's "Kiss" where it is on 96.1, 2 kw down from 95.9.

The last time Max did on the "NY Radio Greats" show on CBS-FM was back in September.

I'll grant you that did sound kind of harsh... and maybe ol' Max is a bit, how shall we say, high maintenance and mercurial, thus his two week whirlwind appearances in some not-so-large markets in the Hudson Valley.

We all know guys (and women) in this business who can be their own worst enemies when it comes to staying with a gig, regardless of market size. Maybe Max's reputation precedes him.

I dunno.

Once upon a time, he was a great jock with great pipes and an entertaining act working in major markets. That's how I came to know him. It's hard to believe that his talent has significantly diminished and he's doing small market radio these days. I'll take your word on WVOS sounding great. Could be one of those dynamic small market stations that could be droipped into a major market without missing a beat.

Maybe Max is "just doing radio" for the love of it, town to town, up and down the dial... trying to find the right fit for his schtick. It wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened... and it wouldn't be the first time a guy like me would wonder why.

Radio people are sooooo complicated. Must be the reason psychiatrists run the other way when they see us coming. ;)

I remember that, Max coming to WCZX 97.7 [they changed call letters in 1987 according to the FCC database] from WCBS-FM complete with reverb. Miller was quite P.O. and so were many of his listeners. They demanded Miller back in the mornings. I got the impression Max thought he was a very special person and we were lucky to have him. However, to go from the big city to small market Poughkeepsie he must have had some baggage that made it difficult to get a job in a large market .Sure he had a great radio voice but there are other issues, like an overly arrogant attitude off air in play as well .I couldn’t hear him on WVOS, but when he was on 97.7 WCZX I couldn’t help but wonder why he was doing small market, and now small town, unrated market WVOS. Does anybody know where he has been in the interim, and how long he has stayed at a station? Perhaps he is living on his good voice and past name but wears out his welcome real fast.

Ol' Max certainly didn't help himself by taking the Po-town express train in his early days at CZX (oldies 97-7 at the time) and expecting the overnight guys to leave the confines of the Pendell Road studios to come pick him up. Could you imagine? He turned the staff of three stations to ice inside 3 days. You knew his days were numbered.

The only think I can think of is that since there is no train service to Bridgeville, he probably called to have the overnight guy come and get him at his house. Except there is no overnight guy.
