Max leapfrogs Rock 103.

At least according to 12+ ratings released by Arbitron today.
http://www.radio-info.com/content/arbitron.php?market=049

It's also funny when Urban Oldies stations that outsource both drivetimes(though music is in-house) are top three. Before the outsourcing, RBO was one of my favorite stations on the air. Oddly enough, KNEK-FM in Lafayette LA(#104) does basically the same thing with a smaller stick and they're number one 12+. If you're RBO, you don't let someone else get Baisden, so I don't blame them for pulling the trigger.

It's safe to say that CC can take Max seriously now. Even though they won't admit it out loud. Would love to know if Rock 103 stays the course, tweaks or knee-jerks.

Probably because of their "Director of Rhythym" or, as we all know him,
He Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken!"

;D

Personally I think both stations lack a lot to be desired. Rock 103's repetitious playlist killed that station for me.

Yeah, I have to agree with ya on the playlist diet... there's just not enough meaty beaty big and bouncy going on for my tastes.

However, I have to admit Bad Dog and Ric are growing on me -- I'm glad some of Ric's real personality is being finally being profiled (along with those other aspects of his life involving black choppers and...well, you know.) ::)

Ok, since I didn't get a response using subtle hints, I'll just come right out and ask --- has anyone tried Bad Dog and Ric in the morning on 103? They've tweaked, poked and prodded a bit but I have to admit I like that they're throwing water out of that sinking boat and by jove, I would not be surprised if they pull this morning show from under the first layer of dirt laid on the casket.... Brother Doug is much better suited in the producer's seat and Mel dropping by for traffic and any naughty bits Chetter coaxes from her honey voice is pure genius..... wow, I think I need a cigarette and I don't smoke! I'll be around to see how it goes......

I don’t post here often but I did want to chime in on the Leapfrog thread.

I have only lived in Memphis for about a year. I only used to be in radio and now have a nine to five like job.

As for Max “leapfrogging” over Rock 103 I cannot say I am surprised. This is just one outsiders take on comparing the two radio stations. I have been surprised at Rock 103 beating Max 12+ but like I say I’m not from here and I figured I was just out of step with other listeners.

Since my arrival here my work mates and neighbors spoke of Rock 103 and how great it was. I’m sorry but I cannot for the life of me hear what some are hearing in the Rock 103 morning show. I’m sure they’re nice people and have probably been in Memphis for some time but I find the entire broadcast day of that radio station dull, lifeless and completely uninteresting an unentertaining. The only reason to listen is if you happen to be a big fan of classic hits.

As for Max I can turn on Drake and Zeke and hear what sounds like a real radio show. Last year I would have had little idea of who was running for mayor of this city and probably as a new resident would have had only a passing interest but Drake and Zeke brought the candidates to my front porch. Now I can hear about every thing from local politics to bee keeping and somehow it all sounds interesting (except sometimes Drake seems to talk over Zeke and guests and callers that I wish didn’t happen). Jarman is growing on me too. I do feel the playlist could be expanded.

I do not mean to offend anyone here and apologize if I have. I have only limited time in radio on air and in promotions so I don’t know everything this is just my opinion. It was the 12+ numbers on allaccess that got my attention and made me want to post here again

I think a lot of the comments here come from the fact that the old-timers in this market know that 103 was at one time a legendary rock radio station. Just kind of sad to compare the 'now' to 'then'

There has been some great air talent come through that station over the years.

I think you would be hard pressed to find any of the "heritage" or "legend" stations in Memphis doing anywhere near as good as they did back in their heyday. WDIA may be the only one in town.

103 used to be an amazing station. I remember listening to the Electric Lunch. I remember hearing the station take a chance on new music by older bands. I remember staying up late to hear METAL SHOP. Now the station is terrible to listen to. 98's playlist started off great but has become an embarrassment as well.

You know, once upon a time this lady on TV told me it was a "remarkable radio station"!

My understanding is, though, that she was paid to say that. Plus, for the most part, it was other people's words in her mouth... a remarkable mouth...

Yeah, yeah she did...and had a red beard as I recall. Most unusual for a girl named Harmon.

Ok, I had to really concentrate for about 60 seconds until I pulled out what you guys were talking about...but that WAS a GREAT spot!

longleggs you are entitled to your opinion but I am wondering how you balance your opinion of 98's playlist as being an embarrasment with the stations steady rise in the ratings. I mean if it's so bad how come so many people are listening to it?
