May 11: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on May 11. Discuss or comment as you please……

1911: Actor Phil Silvers (The Phil Silvers Show a/k/a Bilko a/k/a You’ll Never Get Rich) is born (as Philip Silver) in New York City.

1920: Actor Denver Pyle (The Andy Griffith Show, The Doris Day Show, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, The Dukes of Hazzard) is born in Bethune, Colorado.

1935: Actor Doug McClure (Checkmate, The Virginian) is born in Glendale, California.

1959: TV/radio personality Martha Quinn is born in Albany, New York. She would become one of the original VJs on MTV in its early years. (Remember? When they actually played music videos, and all the programming at least had something to do with music?)

1975: Actor Coby Bell (Third Watch, The Game) is born in Orange County, California.

1985: During a soccer match between Bradford City and Lincoln City, a fire breaks out in the stands of the home team’s Valley Parade football stadium in Bradford, England. Fueled by many years of trash and debris under the 74-year old wooden structure, the fire spreads like a flash. The match is being taped by Yorkshire Television for use on their Sunday afternoon football show, and sports commentators quickly become news reporters as the cameras focus on the conflagration, capturing thousands of fans (some with clothing on fire) frantically escaping from the stands onto the pitch. Within minutes, the entire structure is consumed, and 56 people have lost their lives. After the initial blitz of worldwide news coverage, Yorkshire Television would clamp down on use of the footage out of respect for the victims, licensing its use solely for firefighting training curriculums. They have been quick to have video copies of the blaze pulled from YouTube and other sites (though they continue to pop up here and there) and threatened to sue the U.S. Fox network for unauthorized use of the footage in the program When Good Times Go Bad 3, in which the commentary both implied that the fire had been deliberately set by fans, and narrated the segment with silly puns that Bradford’s citizens felt were horribly inappropriate.

1991: Sisters premieres on NBC.

2001: Author Douglas Adams (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) dies of a heart attack in Montecito, California, aged 49.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)
