On the other hand, gold and even recurrents from a prolific current artist will get less play because those songs just have nowhere to fit while retaining artist separation on the currents.

The 'artist separation' concern in currents no longer applies. It's not unusual for a CHR station to have several Taylor Swift songs in its currents playlist, or country stations to have several Morgan Wallen songs. A look at either chart will show that's true.

Right now, Z100 has two songs each by Dua Lipa, Sza, and Doja Cat in their currents playlist.

Yes, but those songs by the big artists are separated by a considerable amount of other spins of other artists. They don't play back to back. Even if all 3 powers were by Taylor, and the rotation is a very hot 90 minutes, they would be 30 minutes apart.

WXBK 20 years ago would be a top rated station. Many neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens has been gentrified since then with younger Midwesterners. Also WXBK is bland sounding.
I think times are changing. Hip Hop is not as popular as it was 15 years ago. Country is much more popular among the younger groups, these days.

For sure. But we’re talking Brooklyn, NY. Not Brooklyn, Ohio 😎
I live in suburban New Jersey, 10 miles from the city. In the 2000's and through the 2010's, hip hop was very popular here. But since around mid 2010's, Country started becoming more popular among people in their 20's-30's. I could also just be getting older too

No, you’re right. It’s more popular than it's been especially in the suburbs. I know people who are in their 30s who listen to a few country songs here and there. And they’re from the city.

It seems 3 stations focusing on a genre which is waning in popularity are too many. And of course many of the songs on The Block are also on other stations, such as WKTU.

According to who? Do these stations make money and meet their objectives? Most of us don't know but presumably they do or their formats would be changed. What's more is WXBK doesn't appeal to the same demos that WWPR and WQHT do. Cumes are still decent despite low ratings but my guess is that we'll see more popular genre stations flounder as more and more people look to other media outlets. We'll be left with brokered, oldies, AC, religious, ethnic and maybe even some dead air in 15 years.
