May 22: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on May 22. Discuss or comment as you please……

[NOTE: Some of these May dates are full of series finales and last episodes. Rather than devote separate lines to each, I will just mention that some of the better-known series that had a May 22 swan song include 3rd Rock From the Sun, Blossom, Kate and Allie, Malcolm and Eddie, Veronica Mars, and Felicity.)

1910: Announcer Johnny Olson (To Tell the Truth, What’s My Line?, Match Game, The Jackie Gleason Show, I’ve Got a Secret, The Price is Right) is born in Windom, Minnesota.

1922: Producer Quinn Martin (The Fugitive, Twelve O'Clock High, The F.B.I., The Invaders, The Streets of San Francisco, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, etc., etc., etc.) is born in New York City. (At least that’s what IMDB says – some sources place his birth in Pennsylvania.)

1942: Actress Barbara Parkins (Peyton Place) is born in Vancouver, British Columbia.

1954: KFXJ-TV (channel 5, now KREX-TV) goes on the air in Grand Junction, Colorado.

1956: KRIS-TV (channel 6) begins broadcasting in Corpus Christi, Texas.

1957: KBTX-TV (channel 3) signs on in Bryan, Texas. They have operated from the same building (on East 29th Street in Bryan) from their first sign-on to today. (The building has been added on and expanded multiple times.)

1958: The dedicatory ceremonies for WRC-TV’s new studios in Washington, D.C., featuring an address by President Eisenhower, are broadcast in color. The videotape of this colorcast survives and has been restored – it is the oldest extant color videotape.

1960: New York’s NBC flagship changes calls from WRCA-TV to WNBC-TV.

1961: Actress Joan Davis (I Married Joan) dies of a heart attack in Palm Springs, California, aged 53.

1978: Actor J.D. Williams (Oz, The Wire) is born in Newark, New Jersey.

1982: With the transfer of ownership from RKO to New England Television (after two years of legal wrangling), the former WNAC-TV (channel 7, Boston) signs on this morning as WNEV-TV.

2001: Actor Whitman Mayo (Sanford and Son, Grady) dies of a heart attack, aged 70, in Atlanta, Georgia. (Ironically, at Grady Memorial Hospital.)

2004: Actor Richard Biggs (Days of Our Lives, Babylon 5) dies suddenly in his home in Los Angeles of complications stemming from aortic dissection, aged 44. (It is the same undiagnosed heart condition that felled John Ritter the previous year.)

2005: Say it ain’t so, Tony! Singer/voice artist Thurl Ravenscroft dies from prostate cancer in Fullerton, California, aged 91. Besides being the voice of Tony the Tiger for an incredible 53 years (over 500 commercials), he is also revered for his performance of the song “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” on the animated special How the Grinch Stole Christmas. His voice can also be heard in many Disney feature films, as well as throughout the attractions at the various Disney theme parks.

2005: The new “reimagined” Kojak dies a merciful death after just 10 episodes on USA Network. (C’mon....Ving Rhames? As Theo Kojak? There weren’t any bald, Greek, white guys available?) ::)

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

What a mistake that was.

Alas, the IGAS Olson announced was the 1972-73 syndicated version. (John Cannon remained announcer of IGAS over its nearly 15 years on CBS.) Johnny O, however, did announce for the CBS To Tell the Truth from 1960 until the respective cancellations of the nighttime version in 1967 and the daytime version in 1968 - as well as for the syndicated version from 1969 to '72.

1960: New York’s NBC flagship changes calls from WRCA-TV to WNBC-TV.

And it was such a big deal that a half-hour prior to the noon call-letter change (which also pertained to its AM and FM sisters), there was a special titled The Switch Is to NBC, which featured such luminaries as Mayor Robert F. Wagner and local Channel 4 personalities including Gabe Pressman and the Ritts puppets. The May 21-27, 1960 New York-Metro edition of TV Guide, however, listed the program under the heading "Call Letters Ceremony," though a two-page spread of the ad for this special was put out by Channel 4 for publication in those listings.

Both the final sign-off of WNAC-TV and the first sign-on of WNEV-TV are, as of this writing, on YouTube, both with the distinctive voice of longtime staff announcer Leif Jensen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1KnCWWMnsE (final WNAC-TV sign-off)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO-rHMo4tTw (inaugural of WNEV-TV)
Apparently, in the last years as WNAC-TV, Channel 7's sign-off was pre-recorded, which was why the final words heard under the old regime were, "We now conclude telecasting for the day" - with no hint that this was the last time anyone would see WNAC-TV on channel 7.

1910: Announcer Johnny Olson (To Tell the Truth, What’s My Line?, Match Game, The Jackie Gleason Show, I’ve Got a Secret, The Price is Right) is born in Windom, Minnesota.

I was listening to Cincinatti's 700 WLW the night Olson had died back in 1985. At the time ( they may very well still do this ) for at least 30 minutes prior to the news, WLW would do a tease about the top stories. That night WLW was saying "...Coming up on 700 WLW...you won't hear Come On Down..anymore"..and "..no more The Price Is Right....thanks to death..stay tuned to 700 WLW" plus "Game Show Fans are in mourning tonight...The Price Is Right..has lost a big one..stay tuned to the Big One 700 WLW for the latest".

When I heard those teases..at first I had though it was BOB BARKER who had died...and I wasn't the only one either. I think its a safe bet to say that WLW had received some calls about it as when the actual top of the hour news had aired, the reporter out of the blue actually apologized claiming WLW didn't mean to imply that it was Bob Barker who had died ( ah..yeah right ) but rather it was Johnny Olson

Bob Barker, I believe, is immortal... ;)

As regards "Come on down!", even though Olson coined the phrase, successors Rod Roddy and Rich Fields continued to use the phrase, I think both out of respect for Olson and the fact that it was indelibly identified with the show by that time. If Johnny had been smart, he would have trademarked the phrase, so that every time the show used it, his heirs would get a residual payment. :D

And the funny thing is that Olson could very well have done that too :D

...but then again shortly after 9/11 I can remember when Lisa Beamer ( her husband Todd was on that Pennsylvania flight..United 93 that crashed ), she tried to copyright the words "Let's Roll"...words that Todd was supposed to had said before he and some of the passengers tried to take over the plane from the hijackers. I believe Lisa's comment at the time was "..those words belong to Todd now". Ah..not only did that NOT work out but Lisa Beamer who for a time it seemed was the woman America felt sorry for the most during 9/11 ( shameful..what about the others who had died during 9/11 ? ) ..well lets just say rather fast it went from "..what a poor woman..let us pray for her" to "..My God..what a stupid greedy bitch !!".

Lisa Beamer quickly took herself out of the spotlight.

Don't forget Johnny Carson's final night of hosting "The Tonight Show" on May 22, 1992. The opening 8:45 of this classic TV moment is available on YouTube at:
