Is the cost of a Nielsen subscription so substantial that public radio organizations, increasingly abandoned by corporate and philanthropic donors, feel that ratings are a luxury they can't afford?

The decision seems to be specific to Rochester, not public radio in general.

True, but trends have to start somewhere. Bears watching in other markets.

Also, I noticed that two university stations -- WRUR and WEOS -- also didn't subscribe this month. Are they connected in any way to the WXXI Council or did they just, coincidentally, make the same decision not to buy this latest book?

There's a programming relationship among the stations.

It's possible that they don't subscribe to the books every month.

They also didn't subscribe last month, as noted by the N/A in the chart.

Public stations use Nielsen primarily for the demographic information. However, that same data is available to public stations through the Radio Research Consortium and GuideStar, among others. Those services are more targeted to public radio and their specific needs.

Usually the stations that subscribe through the RRC only will appear in the quarterly "books", which will be next month's.

However, WXXI's numbers have been screwed up since the 105.9 acquisition as they never informed Nielsen of Total Line Reporting for 1370 and 105.9 and the diary confusion created by moving the WXXI-FM calls from 91.5 to 105.9.

Seeing WHAM 1180 still has the 5 O’Clock Newshour on its schedule made me smile. I don’t know who does it now but back when I was in Rochester 2006-08 I always listened to on my long drive down Chili every evening.
