May numbers are here

May numbers: Radio Industry News, Radio Show Prep, Radio Promotions, Radio Station Data, Podcast News

(I would have used the RadioInsight version, but that is linking to the old April numbers as I type this)

Big news is a HUGE surge for The Buzz.

Mega 101 drops back a bit, April may have been a random spike.

SportsTalk 790 moves further ahead of main rival SportsRadio 610.

Our favorite dumpster fire KROI still stuck in the zeroes. Note that Radio One did some station wheeling and dealing in Indianaoplis today, expanding into more formats outside of their usual core audience. Might be open to more possibilities for 92.1.

Another ouch, errr... Gowch for KFNC, stuck at 0.2. Once again, David, call Alfred.

And, TUDN on landfill fire 93.3 improves (?) to 0.2.

Out of curiosity, do you personally listen to any sports radio? If so, do you prefer 610 or 790?
I enjoy the morning show on 610. The midday show is a mess. Afternoons would be better if Clint Stoerner had a strong co-host.

Last time I regularly listened to 790 was when Charlie Pallilo worked there (2004-16.) Pretty much abandoned 790 after they fired him. On recent sampling I just don't find 790 compelling listening.

97.5 is tolerable in the afternoon, but often just barely. I completely avoid the two morning shows. Can't stand Granato. Wish they had kept Pallilo, who has said he was the victim of consultants who advised going in another direction. My guess is the consultants told David Gow to "dumb it down" and that Pallilo was too intellectual for the target audience.

No interest in The Bet 650 as I am not into sports gambling and related discussion. Wish CBS SportsRadio was still available in the market, as it was a nice national alternative when local hosts veered into nonsense.

I prefer 790 because they have better Astros coverage.

I wish a station would have Charlie Pallilo and Rich Lord paired up again. Of course that won’t happen.

Seeing the success of the buzz with it's heavy 90s lean, I wonder if a 90s 2000s heavy based active rock station could be good fit for 92.1.

Agreed, perhaps the best combo ever on Houston SportsTalk radio. Miss those days.

Speaking of SportsTalk, note that KTCK in DFW pulled a 4.9 with its AM/FM simulcast. Think of how well a similar simulcast might work in Houston with 92.1 in play. Of course KTCK has long resonated with its target demo…Houston SportsTalkers should take note. And the other DFW SportsTalker, KRLD-FM, manages a 2.2. So combined you have a 7.1 for the format in DFW, while Houston’s three stations only manage a combined 2.7. Embarrassing.

Radio One could make some Majic if they could think outside The Box for 92.1.😏

An eye opener also out of DFW: KRNB “Smooth R&B 105.7” pulls a 4.1 for fifth place in that market, and that is on a rimshot signal! Might Radio One try that sort of format on 92.1?

A “90’s to now” format that is running in a number of other markets might be another option. The current Praise format is doing even worse than it did the first time around.

Dallas also has a much better sports landscape to talk about. The Stars and Mavs recently made the playoffs. In Houston -- at this time -- there's no hockey team to speak of, the Rockets are terrible, and the Texans are attrocious. The Astros seem to be doing well, but its early in the season and there's not a lot of fresh takes to be had on that team.

With lousy sports teams, you need shows that are more in the "guy talk-meets-sports talk" category to keep things exciting and draw in a wider pool of listeners. Think Toucher and Rich from Boston. I'm not aware of anyone really offering a comparably entertaining show in Houston sports radio right now, and younger listeners wouldn't find such a show anyway if it were on the AM dial.

Texas country to compete with KTWL? Just a random idea.

KLOL seems to always have a random spike once a year, so seeing it come down is not really surprising. However, that huge rise for KTBZ-FM is certainly eye popping. I'm assuming there are definitely still issues with the sample size. Nothing else of much note, but I still wonder what is up with Country Radio in this market since the pandemic.

Before the NFL Draft, I once tuned into KILT during the mid day show out of boredom to see what nonsense I may catch them say, and sure enough I tuned in during the middle of a Texans draft discussion in which someone asked "If the Chiefs offered #30, #62, and a 2nd next year for #3 this year, would you take it?" and someone actually said yes because they were not a fan of Kyle Hamilton. That told me all I needed to know about that show.

could it be that none of the sports talkers in Houston has developed a following like the Ticket.

It's not just sample size. With a panel, it is essential to perfectly mirror the universe, as in a perfect world a panel is built a a "micro sample" of the whole market. If the panel ceases to be a mirror, weighting is employed and because the panel is much smaller than a diary type random probability sample, then you get strange variations when one or two households can severely impact the results for (or against) one or two stations.

FM 94.5 KTBZ "The Buzz" suddenly jumped from 4.4 up to 6.2---that's a 41% increase in one month!
The term "statistical outlier" comes to mind. OK, how'd that happen?

Panel not at 100% and some demos are very low, making the few participants "over-weighted" beyond statistical reliability.

I'm sure the AEs will disclose that fact to clients............. 🙄
Most ratings-based sales are done with agencies, and they generally use averages of multiple books to evaluate the market. One strange month will not affect the averages that much.

The ones I know are still in diary markets and they definitely cherry pick the prettiest numbers to show local clients how great an investment on their station or cluster would be.

Less Tuttle and Klein, seems to be working. Personally I'm not a fan since the departure but what do I know. The Morning show is less Q-Zoo and more about the music as the two female hosts rarely crack the mic. I'd be interested in morning ratings now more than ever! Can't believe KKBQ will stand pat, then again they blew up KTHT.
