The 4 way CHR race is interesting. When KPLV shifted from Rhythmic AC to CHR I predicted they would go up, the others would go down and the stations would fragment each other. I was pretty mch right. KPLV was up this month 3.5-4.0. KLUC took a sharp drop 5.9-4.6 and fell from a #1 tie to #7 tie. Somewhat surprisingly NOW-FM did not get hurt at all and was stable 4.0-4.1.
KVEG is the lowest rated of the CHRs and fell 3.6-3.2 their lowest share in recent memory. I wonder if HOT plays too many pop songs? I realize that hip hop is not considered a strong PPM format and that rhythmic leaning pop songs are really hot right now. But the market is so oversaturated with pop that it seems KVEG would be better positioned as pure hip hop than yet another station playing Katy Perry and similar artists.
KMXB moving up 5.1-5.9 is impressive considering all the CHR competition. Back when the market only had CHR/Rhythmic I always thought MIX served as a default CHR/Pop and that was part of their success. But now even if the structure of the market has changed KMXB is still doing good. Of course right now CHR is leaning rhythmic so the music mix is quite different than you would hear on Hot AC.
Lotus's KXPT and KOMP are both doing excellent. Check out the POINT tied with KKLZ for #1 6+. When JACK switched to KXNT-FM I predicted it would impact Lotus more than CBS themselves. It took awhile but now KXPT and KOMP are doing even better than I expected. As others have said there is a hole for a Gen X type 80s/90s rock format. This would bring the Lotus stations back down to earth. But who would do it? How about one of the two alternative stations? Is there room for both of them?
Any other thoughts on this months ratings? If anyone has demo info it would add some more clarity.
