Maybe Bonneville Has Helped Answer The KTWV Question

W

War Of Attrition

Guest
In all of the speculation over the last 72 hours, here is one topic that hasn't been broached.

What happens to the good billing CBS currently enjoys in the way of KFWB and KNX once KRBV flips to All-News (assuming the rumors are true)?

With the self-examination Smooth Jazz operators have been going through over the last year (and especially the past 60 days), what if CBS moved either KFWB or KNX to 94.7 in order to protect the All-News revenue and franchise? If they did, which one would they pick and what would happen to orphan left on AM?

What question regarding KTWV? There is no question. It billed $47 million last year. I can't imagine in this environment that CBS will want to mess with any of their FM's.

Actually, it billed $44 in 06 and $40 in 07, but still one of the top performers in the market.

With all do respect (and I do respect your opinion), I think the question isn't what KTWV is doing today, but where it will be in 5 years and where KFWB and KNX will be next year if Bonneville really does launch All-News on 100.3.

Maybe someone with the data can answer:

- What is KTWV's audience and revenue trends from the past 36 months?

- What is the combined billing of KFWB and KNX?

I am just asking the questions that has not been asked yet; I am not saying this is necessarily the course CBS should take, as I do not have the research to make that judgement.

It's a good question...someone else posted $47 million.

David -- KTWV was off 10% from 2006 to 2007. What was the rest of the market on average?

I bet a lot of stations were off around that in 2007.

This shift could have a major domino effect on the rest of the marketplace as KJLH, KDAY, KHHT, and KTWV should/could benefit from one less Urban station (all have significant Black audiences).

Then if 100.3 goes News, it affects a different set of stations...

KTWV could well benefit from KRBV's demise.

The Wave's revenue was up in 06, but 07 compared to 95 was flat. So there is no growth. But the market was down 6% over that period, so The Wave grew in market share of revenue.

The two news stations billed just under $60 million last year, but KNX was off 25% compared to the previous 3 flat years. Same for KFWB, but that one has no baseball revenue for this year, so numbers will be very different.

The big issue is that both have an overwhelmingly 55+ audience; Bonneville in DC has a much higher percentage of 25-54 than either of the AM news stations here. Of course, there are about two more news shares in FC than here, as would be natural due to the DC mindset and lifestyle as well as the very different ethnicity, etc.

Just under 4% to 1.017 billion in 07.

Yep. Biggest gainer, KLVE up about $10 million.

This may be enought to make KDAY viable... with the new transmitter site, though, I feel someone will take it Korean... again. KTWV would be the big winner.
