I'm about to show my age. I can remember when WMAJ-AM 1450 was a middle-of-the-road station with some personality, WRSC-AM 1390 was a Top 40 daytimer that started and capped its day with Cat Stevens, WBLF-AM 970 was a typical Allegheny Mountain Network station (that can be explained), WXLR-FM 103.1 was largely automated and WQWK-FM ... was it 96.7 then, I don't quite remember ... was a rock station that could sound as good as anything cable FM then was bringing into Happy Valley. The only other stations one could get were WPHB-AM 1260 (a mix of country, gospel and preachers, if I recall correctly), WFBG-FM 98.3 (when it was beautiful music) and I believe someone from Lock Haven.

Reading this new chat room's subjects leaves me wondering ... and I usually have a pretty good grasp of radio across most of the rest of western and central Pennsylvania.

Just rambling on, but I'd appreciate some feedback.

Nittany Valley Radio History

You're not alone--there are a few of us who can remember the foggy distant times before Hot 107.9 hit town (3 years ago). But I was in Harrisburg back in the seventies, so don't remember the specifics like you. And the era you describe sounds like the seventies. Maybe someone else on the board can help. When did WRSC go fulltime? Was Quick originally at 96.7? When did they move to 97.1... and why (still just a class A)? We all know what you mean by a "typical AMN station!" Uh, shall we say "Variety?" Was WXLR an easy listening format ("Relax" for dyslexics)... and when did it become WBHV? Do I remember WMAJ shifting from AC into Top 40 somewhere in the eighties--before going talk? One point I'll disagree on is WFBG--I think they were always at 98.1, weren't they? That's how they became "grandfathered" at the super-power level that they'll soon abandon--that is, they got the extra wattage before the FCC cared about FM. Anybody got answers?

Quite true, specifically 1974-1976 and thereabouts.

Maybe someone else on the board
> can help. When did WRSC go fulltime?

I'm going to suggest sometime in the 80s, but I'm not sure. I do know WRSC took a number of steps to distinguish itself from WMAJ (even to pick up Penn State Football post-game shows because WMAJ, then the sole carrier of Nittany Lion games, dumped the network to carry its own post-game scoreboard).

WRSC also went to cable TV, putting an alphanumeric news channel on with beautiful music as a background.

Was Quick originally at

I believe you may have shaken some of my rust. QWK always was known for being at 97 on the FM dial.

We all know what you mean by a "typical AMN

It was, but I don't remember when it shifted to WBHV.

Do I remember WMAJ shifting from AC into Top 40

I think you shook some more of my rust. I believe you're right about WFBG-FM, too.

That's how they became "grandfathered" at the

Kev knows it was the 70's but he can't remember the exact year. After a while, it all blends together.

Yes

The antenna was moved to a better location for a better signal. Can't lock on the year.

no, Kev seems to remember it being rock.

> and when did it
> become WBHV?

mid-80's

> Do I remember WMAJ shifting from AC into Top 40

yes, you do

Hope that helps a little.

I remember when QWK was at 96.7. Even at 96.7, they were "97 Quick". I remember when they moved, but can't remember the year. Mid-80's, I know. Back then they were CHR.

Re: Nittany Valley Radio History

I knew it! I remember coming up for football games in the mid-eighties and hearing CHR on Quick, though today everyone denies it. Thanks for confirming that I haven't lost ALL my longterm memory. But why did they move to 97.1--which was then exclusively a Class B channel--if they couldn't hike to Class B power? Were they forced to move by someone else's CP on 96.7 or 96.9 (assuming that the super-power Class B on 96.5 in J-town has always kept anyone from screwing with that channel). And when did WRSC stop being a daytimer?

Looking for answers, not guesses

Thanks for the effort, Sweetie. But even though he was on the scene, Kev apparently wasn't paying attention, and your memory has faded--being so long ago. Sometimes we hit the jackpot and get an answer from someone who was on the scene and WAS paying attention. Sorry for jumping down your throat the other day, but--as interested in all this as you may be--you've gotta be careful not to stretch things too much. You've been a casual observer (albeit, for a number of years)--a bystander... maybe even a fan... but some of us are experts in this stuff. We've lived it, for 10 years or 20 years or 30 years or 40 years. Trust me, it looks different from the inside.

So sick of your negative vibe Mountaineer

Now I know what Steve Hilton must have felt a month or so ago. I felt bad about him being bashed then and now it's me.

Hey look, when you're in the business for 35 years, let's see you come up with the exact dates and times for every event that occured on every station. So do not even go into how someone was "not paying attention." I remember when Hot Hits 98 in Philly became an oldies station but I sure as hell could not tell you the year it happened. I WAS paying attention, just not taking freakin' notes. God damnit, apparently the attempt to be helpful with you is moot.

And, while we're at it, let's not even go there with you making assumptions and "warning" me to be careful not to stretch things. I've never lied on this board just like I wouldn't lie to your face or anyone's face.

And I know what you are referring to when you talk about "stretching things". Unfortunately, that information is not available to the public as it has not yet been officially published. That is why I had to keep everything fairly general. If the information were my own intellectual property or published to the public, I would gladly tell you where to find it. Once those findings are published and made available to the public, I'll let you know and can go read all 100+ pages of it. So cut out your insulting, negative and crap ass tone with me and stay off my back.

Don't ever presume to tell me who I am. You may know me, perhaps you've even met me, but you obviously know nothing about me. I've hardly been a bystander and I'm always a fan. Perhaps you are just bitter because you wanted a career in radio and didn't get it...but I have no idea. IF that's the case, I'm sorry that you didn't get your dream but it's not MY fault.

Whatever your problem is, I'm not the only person on this board who has noticed it. Your negative tone, your rotten attitude and your know-it-all defusion of EVERYONE'S opinion should stop here and now. If you can't express an opinion without making it personal, then get ready to rumble. And don't come at Kevin, come at ME. This battle is ME and YOU, not him, so leave him out of it.

Consider yourself called out. Call my home, we're in the book...let me hear what you have to say. Wanna argue over a beer? Pick the place and the time and I'll be there to debate with you in a civil manner. Click on my username and email me personally if you have to but take your personal disappointments off this board. You started with ME, but I will finish with YOU!

Unfortunately for you, you fu**ed with the wrong South Philadelphia Italian chick...you fu**ed up by picking on one that has a brain.

I am very sorry for this post and I apologize to everyone else for having to put up with it, but I will not allow this person to bash me or anyone else. It's very easy for HIM to come at me full throttle simply because he THINKS he knows who I am.

As participants on this board, I would not stand for HIS crap. Who's man or woman enough to stand up with me and say "enough!"??????? Steve? Spackler? penandpad? Jumper? Don't accept this treatment anymore. Insist that HIS posts stay on topic. Again, I'm so sorry this post is off topic but it had to be done.

Re: Nittany Valley Radio History

WQWK: was CHR (with library cuts heavily leaning to Rock, going back some 20 years at that time) at 96.7 from sometime before January of '85 to sometime after November of '86. I know they went by "Quick Rock" when I got to main campus in August of '83 and switched to "97 Quick" sometime between then and the time I started there - but I wasn't paying attention or taking notes. I believe both the format and the frequency remained the same for at least some time after the beginning of '87, but don't quote me on that. I believe the frequency change was to take advantage of (slightly) more favorable coverage resulting from more power and a better transmitter site - and the possibility to upgrade to 6kW equivalent when the FCC finally allowed it the early '90s (it wouldn't have been possible on 96.7).

WRSC: was fulltime sometime before January of '85. I still remember the 20 seconds or so between the time the nighttime sticks were fired up remotely from in the studio and the time it took to run down the hall and turn off the in-house daytime transmitter manually - that phasing was psychedelic, man! - I assume a better system's in place now?

WXLR: retained those call letters for some time after '86.

Nobody's mentioned WDFM - 91.1FM - call letters changed to WPSU in, say, fall of '84 - frequency changed sometime thereafter. No NPR back then - the campus station was staffed, operated, and *programmed* by students! You know, back when radio was fun!

AMF, Aretha!

Actually, I enjoyed a lengthy career in radio before retiring to academia. GM for 20 years... PD & large-market jock for 10 years. Bought & sold a half-dozen stations in Pennsylvania and the midwest. No bitterness here; radio has been very, very good to me. As one of those old "First Ticket" engineers, I also know more than most about the technical side--allocations, move-ins and the like--so I've enjoyed those conversations, too. Sorry, I don't remember bashing Hilton--my apologies. I enjoy his contributions. As for you, dear lady, I did indeed think your weekend post comparing your own purported statewide research to Arbitron was outrageous fiction, and I thought your prior posts promoting Kevin Nelson & WRSC as God's gift to radio was silly and fawning--seen through the eyes of love, I suppose--but inappropriate for a reality-based board. But, look, I'll gladly step aside and leave these discussions to you and the others.

Folks, it's been fun. Good luck in your radio endeavors!

Good Riddance

Thank you...thanks to your clues in other posts and your post here, you just helped me figure out who you are...

For the record...I never said the research was done to out do Arbitron. That was merely a small piece of a much larger campaign. I just decided to find out what listeners in a specific demographic were listening to and I decided to try something different. And, it worked. We were not doing research about Arbitron, their methods or anything like that.

For the record...I will always be 100% behind my husband. If I have something constructive to offer, I tell it to him, not to a bunch of "strangers" on a board.

Re: So sick of your negative vibe Mountaineer

> It does seem like a lot of the posts on this “radio board” are posts from ex radio people! You know they say once radio gets in your blood you are done for. It also seems that a lot of the posts are folks that had been in radio at one time or another in State College and have moved on to other towns too. It’s great that they check in. It’s bad I think that they continue to bash stations or people even if they have been gone for a long time. I think MissA and Mount both make great points. I assume they are still both local. Do you all see owners and sales types on the boards a lot? I wrote another post today about some of the threads and comments its funny to me how everybody is a critic. I guess that’s what this forum is for. > Jesus Christ, now I know what Steve Hilton must have felt
