Maybe I'm Just Gettin' Old But.....

First of all I am a fan of 1250/930... I think they do a great job with Pirate coverage and they sound good and have the best website for a radio station I've ever seen. The station has alot of talented people and this is by no means targeted towards any one person there but I heard something today that just struck me as so unprofessional. I'm listening to the the Tulane postgame coverage and I hear a liner that says something to the effect of "Pirate radio is radio with an attitude so %%^&*&* off " and then there was something about
someone @#$%%^%^* in their cornflakes". The offending words were bleeped out but still I was listening with my 10 year old son. C'mon guys do you have to resort to the lowest common denominator, fratboy, generation X stuff to image your station??? There has gotta be a better way to brand yourself than to resort
to such stuff as that. You have a good station.... why lower yourself to such immature, unprofessional lingo???? I see the audience you are trying to reach
but there has got to be a better way. Again, maybe its just me but it just sounded so guttermouthed among very professional Pirate coverage. You guys can do better....Just my opinion....

Allen

They've had that liner for a good three years. Really, it's no worse than some things that are said on Packman (especially the whiner line calls that are played in the show opener) but I agree that there is a time and place. Postgame show (when you know the whole family is listening) probably isn't the best time to air it.

It's probably a rotating cart though, in with all the other liners.

There's no room at ANYTIME for that kind of GUTTERMOUTH stuff. How 'bout showing you paid attention in English class.

I'm a believer in the "if your entire family can't listen without being offended" don't do it! Allen is dead on!

Maybe this kind of "imaging" is why radio is losing listeners in droves....hey and the college crowd that would like and relate to this kind of nonsense in listening to their Ipod or MP3 player.

Clean it up guys!!

The "guttermouth stuff" is censored with a beep.

Have you never listened to a sports talker? It's not like they're doing anything out of the ordinary here. It's a station named after a college mascot in a college town... it fits.

To me it doesn't add anything positive to the station, bleeps or no bleeps. Its a cheap, childish way of getting attention reguardless of when it airs or where it airs...It just struck me as middle school stuff and again I like most of what the station does but I can't imagine Terry Holland,Steve Ballard,Jeff Charles etc...
like that type of thing. You run the bleep liner and in the next break run a Terry Holland liner??????? Gotta be smarter than that rotator or no rotator....

Allen

"It fits," but it's things like that that keep me from listening to stations that have the "attitude" with my kids, who are always with me in some number (we have 4).

That's why you can't listen to Packman with kids. That's why you can't listen to Jim Rome with kids. Not having listened to Rush Limbaugh in the last ten years, I heard him say "What the h--- ...." or "Where the h---..." three times in ten minutes last week before I gave up on that. That's why it's hard to watch non-religious tv, because like the "Baby Momma" movie commercial they showed this weekend on cable a bunch, it's got the b-word right in there.

I would just rather explain to kids when they are ready, not when the radio or the tv determines they need to know, what some things are, ya know? So I'll just wait and listen to "attitude radio" when they're ready for it....

I should'nt have to do any song and dance and explain anything to my 10 year old
while we are listening to a football postgame show. Jim Rome is to me alot of song and dance without much substance and it you listen closely I swear you can hear a producer feeding him lines to use.Jim Everette should have punched
him when he had the chance. Packer I like but its all overkill and it kinda overloads me. I love my sports but some people just eat, sleep and breathe it.It is just a game, and day will break reguardless of who won and lost.Do we need four hours of pregame and four hours of postgame really???? I miss a 15 minute
pre and post, turn the lights out and let's all go home Too much of a good thing
is too much of a good thing. Can you over analyze a game??? I say yes... I'm a sports junkie but too much shuts my central nervous down. With that said I think Jeff Charles is one of the best ever. I really admire his talent....

Allen

Yeah, Jeff Charles really is one of the best ever. The energy that guy has is amazing... he makes some other PBP guys sound like they're falling asleep.

The four hours of pregame is aimed at people who are tailgating. The postgame show does go on forever, but people are still calling for that amount of time... so there's still people who want to hear it. I do think it's better than them just flipping the switch and letting ESPN radio take over for the rest of the weekend -- at least the call in show is local!

About Rome and Packer, I used to like listening to them because they weren't taking themselves so seriously. They would talk about sports, but in more general terms, which are easier to make fun of and joke about anyway. If some player said something stupid, Rome would make fun of that. Packman would have more guys trying to one-up each other and trash talk, but that was usually more entertaining than offensive, like the Cowboy fan Stanley who calls "from Sacramento" I think it is. Caricature almost, but non-threatening to a 10 year old.

Some sports shows are all about the minutiae of how this dude needs to defend this other dude, or how this guy needs to pitch to this dude. Realistically, if it's about sports, neither style is talking about anything listeners have control over, but at least we can identify with the general sports talk, ya know? Well, at least until they start throwing out the "attitude" so much....

the language is a little harsh, however, i've heard liners that are just as bad, if not worse on FM stations with much better coverage....does it make it right? no. but pointing fingers at one station for a "bad language" liner isn't fair when you're not going to do it for others.

So we got to list every violation in order to encourage one, local station to do better?

Let's just stick with encouraging one local station to do better at a time.....all the "does worse" stations can do what they want.

In cleaning it up it should be for All formats and all stations. Rock, Hip Hop, Urban, Sports should be held to a higher standard. You know even as an adult I do not want to be subjected to hearing off color language on stations that should operate in the public interest as a public trustee.
Either clean it up or lose your licence to operate.

You want to use unacceptable language or the bleep that doesn't do anything to the language that even a 4 year old can figure out take it to the internet, keep it off the public airwaves!

There is no appropriate place on locally FCC licenced radio stations to use bad language, questionable language as most put it or off color comments, sexual or otherwise.

Again, CLEAN IT UP!

My two cents, I couldn't agree with Clay and Allen more! That's why they made Sirius and XM for pottymouths like Stern and the like.

P.S. Clay did you ever work at WQDR?

Kris

I have to agree with Allen and others 10000%. There is NO PLACE for that kind of language on ANY FCC Licensed station - period bleeped or not. I don't like the name of one sports show on ESPN TV called "The Best D--- Sports Show". There is no need to use profanity for a show title. Yes, you can have it on such services as XM or Sirius or HBO or Showtime since you have to pay extra for these services but put technology in place so that children CAN'T access it on these services. I thought that we as "adults" were more sophisticated, educated and what not than to stoop to using four letter words to express ourselves. These "colorful metophors" as Mr. Spock on Star Trek aptly put it do NOT show sophistication and educated people as a society. There seems to be a large proliferation of profanity everywhere lately no matter what type of media. Some companies (Wal-Mart for one) will NOT tolerate the use of profanity by it's employees. This kind of language should NOT be used especially for imaging of any kind on any format. It serves no purpose. And defiantely not when kids may be listening as in a sports event. Granted they probably would hear it if they were at teh game itself, but we as "adults" should have better discretion in our use of words. Yeah some would say that most of those that use that language at football games are drunk and don't know any better and that's just the point, we as "adults" should set better examples of how we want our kids to be and behave. Same with the "celeberties" that they all lookup to (i.e sports players, music stars and actors). Maybe just maybe there won't be so much bad things coming from the younger generations.

I wasn't singling any station out..I was just ticked with what I heard at the time.
Most of the time when I tailgate at ECU I'm hearing music playing not pregame
chatter.Lets face it all the stations are doing it for the dollar. Its an easy sell. Let's say a rule was made to say you can do 4 hours of pregame coverage but you can't do it for profit... I wonder how quickly all the stuff would go away...
Its 90% about the money.Nothing wrong with that at all but its not about love and loyalty. Over the years I've heard so many smile and sing praises but as soon as the mic is off its criticism, laughter and gossip ensue. Its like that in life I guess but its funny how many phonies there are claiming to love something. If the average Joe only knew some of the behind the scenes stuff I think their heads would spin....Radio people can be academy award winning actors. So much childish he said, she said stuff..The Young & The Restless is not nearly as entertaining..

Allen

The behind the scenes stuff is exactly what it is, behind the scenes. We're talking about "on the air"..listeners do notice what happens on the air and are totally in the dark about off air stuff.

We all have colorful stories behind the scenes...it's part of why we lined up for the low pay and long hours, if we all just went home after work we'd probably given it up years ago...the energy of a radio station and the family like bonds were addictive.

Radio can be fun, compelling and clean at the same time. One of the best at that was Bob Inskeep in Raleigh during his WRAL-FM days, clean and family oriented as was Ron McKay of WKIX, G-105 & WTRG fame.

We all should strive to follow their example of entertainmen without the gutter bucket, unimaginative shock jock stuff.... Again, CLEAN IT UP!

Yes Kris I did work at WQDR.

FBI was one of my all-time radio "heroes". I loved listening to his morning show His sidekick Rowl Gorman <sp> is still doing radio, but I loved his Zoot character. Great stuff! I wish I had air checks of his stuff then, but I don't.

I'm glad to know there are radio broadcasters who feel the same way i do regarding
the language and the standard we should set for everyone who are listeners, and
this should apply for television as well.
In the last three decades, we have witnessed a decline in decency all around us, i think the time has come to stop this immortal behavior, but don't look for this to
take place anytime soon.
