Maybe it's finally time for WYSP to ...

If WYSP is going to continue broadcasting Eagles games, they should pick a format that is conducive with that type of programming. So I think that counts out any Adult Contemporary formats.

Not so fast. For the longest time (during the 90's heydays) KVIL/Dallas (a lite AC station) was the flagship for those stinkin' Cowflops... errrr, Cowboys.

Likewise, not too far away, the flagship station for the Houston Oilers for a few years was none other than... Beautiful Music station KODA!

Why does everyone think the Eagles games have to stay on WYSP? It's not like CBS doesn't have any other stations in the market. And it's not like they don't have a buncha billboards on which to advertise the new radio home of the birds. I have no reason to think Philadelphians who want to listen to football on the radio are too stupid to locate it on another frequency.

I think the Eagles would be fine on WIP. Others on the board, though, think that FM sound quality is demanded either by football listeners or by the Eagles themselves.

  • Don't be afraid to throw in some old-ass Amber, Arrested Development, Everything But the Girl, Jane Child, Real McCoy, Soul For Real, SWV, TLC, 98º... Hell, even the Spice Girls. (Just as "Oldies" has to change, so does AC. Going heavy on Top 40 titles from when such a desirable demo was in high school and college has got to be a good thing.)

Isn't that essentially 106.1's format?

the eagles on 94WYSP sound great why would i want to listen to them on AM

if CBS flipped ysp they could put em on 98.1

WISX isn't really something I'd consider when deciding how to program a new format in Philadelphia. It's not even a real station: It's a placeholder, much like Sunny 104.5 was. It was created to stop another station from doing the format...which is why it pretty much sounds like shit. A CBS-run Hot AC would not have to be castrated to protect the other 117 stations Clear Channel owns in the market. It would be free to grab listeners from B101 as well as from Q102, WDAS-FM, et al. (I imagine it'd also get some ears from Wired 96.5 and BEN-FM and would be a nice compliment to WOGL.)

Say what you will about WISX, they're neck in neck with Q102 in 6+ share, and I'd bet their demos are slightly older and therefore more valuable, and with a slightly lower cume (still 8th in the market) which means a slightly higher TSL. Their ratings are probably close to the limit on the audience for this format. Their ratings are good but they're not lighting the world on fire, and the station you describe would be in direct competition with them, splitting whatever Rhythmic AC audience there might be.

I think CBS should go more in the direction of a direct competitor to B-101 than a direct competitor to WISX (or WMGK).

I believe the people who are listening to WISX aren't listening because it's good; they're listening because it's almost what they want. I am of the opinion that WISX would be very simple to destroy. As far as the scenario being discussed in this thread, I'm not really interested in the destruction of WISX of course. I'm interested in finding a good format for 94.1.

I am also of the opinion that no one is ever going to come into town an launch a successful Mainstream AC that goes head-to-head with B101. Philly is one of those "habit" markets where people don't change. If B101's P1's have a choice between Bonnie Raitt, Billy Joel, and Sheryl Crow on B101 or Bonnie Raitt, Billy Joel, and Sheryl Crow on 94.1, they're going to stick with B101. Of course, I could be totally wrong but I seriously doubt a B101 clone would last longer than a year or two. But WISX is hardly a brand and I highly doubt anyone is in the "habit" of listening to them.

That's why I think it would be a better idea to do Hot AC on 94.1. Clear Channel knew someone was gonna do it and that's why they beat them to the punch with this eunuch Hot AC. There's clearly an audience for it and if someone does it right, I think WISX's listeners are ripe for the picking.
