Mayday! Mayday! for Boston conservative talkers

Here’s a thought. The halcyon days of talk radio were the days in which it enjoyed influence over politics and public thought: Jerry Williams, Barbara Anderson, etc. When they pounded away at an issue, people were moved to action and change took place. There has been over the past few months incessant talk radio drumbeating over illegal immigration on both Boston talk radio and conservative national talk radio. Despite the non-stop criticism, we’re still waiting for the first anti-immigration march, or indeed any sign of grassroots conservative interest in the matter. However, the drumbeat may have helped actually harm the cause by rallying the immigrants themselves who are taking their case to the street today, May 1. Is the conservative talk radio era of influence at last at an end?

Was there ever an 'era of influence'? Did Jerry ever win his seat belt battle?

there was an anti-undocumented immigrant rally in Boston within the past month. I think Jay Severin tried to get people out for it...I miss that "buckle up buckle up" song that Jerry played on his show during the seatbelt battle. And, somewhere, I have video of him from the Morton Downey, Jr. show...

Well a bill to give illegal aliens the same tuition rate as state citizens (or maybe even lower/free)was quickly defeated due to talk radio pressure. "Melanie's bill" (drunk driving stronger enforcement")got some traction on talk radio...the Dubai ports deal was rejected, or at least given moreattention, with _national_ talk radio pressure.>>Did Jerry ever win his seat belt battle?Maybe not but last time I checked, New Braintree didn't have a prison (or maybe they put one up after all when I wasn't looking)

You would think if there ever really was an 'era of influence', 'just say no' would have caught on.

Perhaps the reason there isn't an anti- ILLEGAL rally is because the rest of us are too busy working (to support these ILLEGALS)!

When you say "influence" do you mean "a useful tool to distract the US public from our nightmarish involvement in Iraq"?

"Cry Me A River Jane Fonda"???Both Republicans and Democrats use the age-old trick of fanning the flames of an alternate issue when they need to distract the public from an unpopular event or decision. You don't think that the Bush admin is glad that the Iraq war is off of the front page for now? You don't think that conservative talk hosts are glad that they have something else to talk about besides trying to pretend that everything is going just fine in Iraq?I still don't understand the Jane Fonda connection.

...something which was shown on Family Guy last week, when Mayor Adam West made an embarassing decision about a statue and quickly whipped up a gay marriage ban to divert attention from his mistake(that solid gold "Dig 'Em" statue). Some say a certain impeached President would attack Iraq `or Kosovo to divert attention from a certain intern; Operation Change-The-Subject. Nothing new.
