Mayor returns to terrestrial radio

Just heard Dave Pratt is going on 103.9. The Mayor returns!

YIKES! This calls for a backyard BBQ ;)

I would think he would allow X to run the show but when the songs come up.. the internet feed would be different than the X feed. Even though I listen to his show on my smart phone daily, it will be nice to also have the option on fm radio.

Returns to a rim-shot?

I'm sorry, but based on the hype he'd been self-generating, I figured the mighty Pratt brand would be landing on a signal that would at least cover the entire valley.

Instead he's "returned" to the airwaves on a frequency that has been (to put it kindly) an also-ran for it's entire existence.

It will be interesting what he can and will do for that station. the people on the x103.9 facebook page are pissed that they are losing their current morning show.

103.9 has a good signal. I don't see why folks always clown their stick.

Ask that to folks on in the northwest Valley, where North Mountain and Shaw Butte causes some bad multipath interference for 103.9 (the same set of mountains that causes what you call "Static 98.3" in Tempe wreaks havoc on the opposite side). That could be reduced by turning off the stereo carrier, but that only makes sense if they're doing a spoken-word format.

Glancing at X103.9 Facebook post announcing Pratt, the replies are more negative than positive. However I think Pratt will have a net gain in listeners. Some who threaten to leave will, but most will stay and more will come on board.

A couple of months back, one of the stations I work for blew up a format in favor of a simulcast of another signal with signal challenges, and the fans of the old format came to disrupt the facebook page. However, the ratings of that format just plain sucked and something had to be done. When you're down in 23rd place, you can't let a vocal minority get in the way of progress, unless you really like being in 23rd place.

he will be just fine and the "no format pratt" is exactly what X needs. No rules in the morning, just the Mayor doing what he does best. ;-)

No offense, but ANYTHING would get better ratings than what they've been doing.

Maybe, but then again, maybe not.

I'm trying to remember if there was ever a time that any format or show on that frequency managed to break out of the bottom half of the ratings, and nothing is coming to mind. Various owners and management have thrown the kitchen sink at that signal over the years to no avail.

I listen to 103.9 on my iPhone (I live in CT). But now that Pratt is taking over Hammer's shift, I will be exclusively listening to HMS in the morning. I'm just not a fan of McDouble P. En Vivo.

Does 103.9 even knows who listens to their station?! A bunch of hipsters who don't care about a 50 yr old man!

A bunch of 12-year old kids who have Linkin Park and Incubus on their iPods constitute "hipsters"? No offense, but that's got to be the most ignorant thing I have ever seen on this message board. Not to mention an insult to the bona fide tastemakers who wouldn't be caught dead listening to 103.9. No, OneHorseTown, they're not "hipsters" - poseurs, yes; trendies, yes; but definitely not hipsters. So, no, I don't think the Mayor's a bad investment for 103.9. At all. They could do worse. In fact, I wish Dave well.

This has been "in the works" for years now, maybe three or fours years! The general manager/coo is in love with Pratt. He's been foaming at the mouth trying to hire him and recapture Dave's glory years for his failing X format. He even tried to hire him for the Latino format if you can believe that one... Good luck and get ready for a radio group that will celebrate when all their stations reach the mid 2 shares... LOL
