MB Radio 2010 - Classic Hits

Who might flip formats this year? I may say one of the oldies/classic hit stations will as the beach as a couple of them. Sunny 103.1, 94.9 The Surf, then you also have Movin 94.5 and Easy 105.9 along you could add 104.9 Bob FM. Out of those 5 stations I hear Movin 94.5 the most as I always hear it in Subway along with some small shops.

I don't think 103.1 or 105.9 are going anywhere....105.9 does extremely well and 103.1 (and Bob) does decent and is probably cheap to run. The others, though...I guess there could be a chance.

The one called the Surf 94.9 may have serious problems. Their owner is in bankruptcy. They might do more than flip formats....they might just flip out.

Maybe Bill Norman's WNMB 900 will pick up where they left off.

Terrible signal, but I've heard great things about the station and its music.

Personally, I'm sticking with Easy 105.9. Not perfect, but close.

Have been too busy lately to do posting, but want to comment on the wnmb signal comment above. Our signal is directional. The station was designed to serve North Myrtle Beach. There are two towers adjacent to the Barefoot Resort area. 70% of our 500 watt signal travels north and goes right through the heart of North Myrtle Beach. We go very well into North Carolina and even at places like Fort Fisher, you can hear us very well. We get lots of calls and e-mails from the NC coast. The southbound signal goes well into Myrtle Beach at about 21st avenue north. It's all doing just what it was designed to do.

Now, as to the Surf, 94.9, I have been getting lots of phone calls wanting to know what is going on. What most of you probably don't know is that the Surf is broadcasting from a building that we (WNMB) own in North Myrtle Beach. The Surf has no ownership in the building at all. They are simply a tenant. Their owner, I am told, has filed a chapter 11. Those who are familiar with bankruptcy laws know what that means, so I can't say much else about it because we have retained a law firm which specializes is these matters in order to protect our interests.

I will tell you concerning the format comments in this thread that the Surf or any other station has no influence on our programming. Good or bad, we do our own thing and it works for us, so we are not going to change it because of the fortunes of another station.
We have been very blessed to have received many nice remarks about our music and community involvement. It has resulted in a good and stable client base. I make enough mistakes without making one over formats!

by the way, VChimpanze, we stream at 48k at wnmb900.com, and our WNMB spokesperson on all station ID material is Vanna White. She is much prettier than you!

How do you know?

I made that comment about your format possibly changing because I thought maybe you would see the station many regard as the greatest on the Grand Strand would need replacing, but obviously you have something that works.

Just got back from a quick three day visit to Myrtle Beach and must say I really loved and enjoyed Movin 94.5 and Easy 105.9, both stations sounded terrific to me, the "wow" factor as far as song selection kept me tuned to these stations most of my visit. I did listen to Bob FM, nothing special to me, I really want to like the Surf, I love beach music, but my problem with this station (and 770 AM in Rockingham) is they need to at least play a more familiar oldie/beach/r&b tune every three songs or so.

I am a huge fan of EASY 105.9. I listen to their stream quite often. You are right about the "oh wow" factor. They recently played Chicago-Color My World which was very much an "oh wow"moment for me. I love how large their library is..they play anything you can think of (or have forgotten about) that would fit the format. Sometimes I have to pinch myself because it seems too good to be true that a station like this exists in 2010.

I am happy to see they are #2 (and the #1 music station) in Myrtle Beach. I hope that if they ever feel the pressure to get younger they keep the relaxation theme instead of hardening up and playing typical Hot AC type songs you hear on a million different stations.
There is an ambience music stream I listen to called "chill out afterparty". They are contemporary sounding yet relaxing to the max. They play some songs that would sound good on WEZV (especially the lush sounding vocals). In fact 105.9 just played a song I hear on the ambient stream... George Benson-Breezin'.

Bill:
I listen to WNMB online here in New Jersey, and you are doing something extraordinary. Small town radio can work, and WNMB is a great example of how an owner with vision can do the right thing, even on AM. Love the music and the personality of the station. Good luck with the move and keep up the good work.

gotta respectively disagree with you carolinaradio. 105.9 is not boring, at least to me, but I am over 50 years old.

I am under 50 and (as you can tell by my previous post) don't find them boring at all. Hearing a song on the radio like Burt Bacharach-Something Big is over the top exciting for me.

Sunny 103.1 is a Myrtle Beach station that plays 70s thru the 90s music. Over the past month or so I've noticed some changes and it's really gotten better.

An instrumental? Amazing!

Incidentally, I think I've mentioned that Radio Baha'i on 90.9 plays smooth jazz. I don't know how much since I only tried it at night.

sunny 103.1 made some type of flip on monday because i was listening to it and they have changed the sweepers. i think they are trying to make at push at 104.9 BOB because the old pd from bob is the new OM at cumulus but i dont see that happening..

Interesting. I didn't know that. I began listening online to the station a couple of days ago. It appears to be jockless...at least for now, but the mix of music sounds really good. With the former pd of bob being at a cross-town competitor, it stands to reason that he might know how to bring bob down if he wanted to. IMHO.
