No, not JOHN McCarty, but his son MATT! Officiallly the new Operations Supervisor for the Dallas office. Congratulations!

That kid (not really sure HOW old he is!) is sharp. Everyone that works with him speaks highly of him. His work ethic seems to be as strong and upstanding as John's. Now THIS is the most well thought out decision I've seen in years in this business...

Congratulations Matt. It's great to see one of the good guys get the top spot.
We all know you're going to do a great job.

Matt handled just about every technology-related loose end for Traffic...keeping the computers running, installing every update and keeping the TV graphics going for two channels, setting up antennas, working out every piece of logistics for the 2-ways, the inter/intra-office networks, wiring up TXDOT camera access, etc etc etc. He's a whiz at all of that, he takes ownership of projects and keeps at it until they're completely done and perfect, everybody gets along with him and respects him...he's, well, a chip off the old block. And, all at the ripe old age of 26! Rare find in this age of post-Boomers who seem to only be concerned with "What's the least amount of work I can do for the most amount of money?" :p

Good for him, will he be cleaning house?
I'm sure he'll have the same attitude I shared when I went through the interview process for that job: Find out what peoples' specific strengths are, and use them there. No matter who's been skewered on this board during earlier discussions about Traffic.com, it was and is still a great crew. I think there's ways to make it run even smoother with the same folks in place.

He is a nice guy. I always enjoyed working with him when he
was producing for me, or assisting in the studio. He always
worked hard, had an immense amount of respect for his elders,
was a sponge to learning the business and art of radio, and
actually gave a good goddamn over some others in the studio
who will not be mentioned (but we know who they were). Us
older traffic dinosaurs over there used to lovingly call him "the
kid", but "the kid" has grown up over the years, and if he follows
in his fathers footsteps, he will do very well. Just remember your
staff are people too. Without them, you'd be nothing. Don't treat
'em like a number, and listen to what THEY have to say as well,
and you'll do great.

Good luck Matt! Kick some ass!

BTW - This dinosaur traffic guy & scanner geek says pony up
the money and upgrade those scanners in the studio if you
haven't already. Go digital. And if you need help and advice
buying and getting those things programmed, just yell...:)
