McConnell..one year later. Anyone know how his show is doing?

While McConnell is probably assured a lifetime Cincinnati show and audience, I am curious about how his weekday show is doing elsewhere. I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but it seems like his weekday show went national about a year ago.

Does anyone know what stations he appears on and if he is gaining markets?

These are the stations I found on radiotime.com

WLAP Mon-Fri 8am 3 hours Lexington KY
WGST Mon-Fri 8am 3 hours Atlanta GA
WLW Mon-Fri 8am 3 hours Cincinnati OH
WFLF Mon-Fri 8pm 2 hours Pine Hills FL
WXNT Mon-Fri 10pm 2 hours Indianapolis IN
WOI Mon-Fri 12pm 1 hour Ames IA
KXIC Mon-Fri 5:06pm 2 hours, 54 minutes Iowa City IA
WXNT Mon-Fri 12am 1 hour Indianapolis IN

McConnell's commercial sales must be bad if he's appearing on WOI-- Iowa's statewide NPR talk station. That station's website lists a program called "Midday" hosted by Katherine Perkins and Doug Cooper.

Of the other stations, none is a market leader (except perhaps KXIC, not in an Arbitron market), none cracks a three share. When his show was first on, there were a couple stations replaying him at night, like KTLK-FM, Minneapolis, which now carries something else. The station in Indy is owned by Entercom, the rest by Clear Channel.

I wonder how he would do live on a leading station? That would make a better experiment than when CC put Jerry Springer on WTAM.

WXNT's delayed broadcast is apparently fairly new (of course WLW blasts in to Indy anyway). Wasn't there a Twin Cities station that was delaying him? McConnell going against Boortz in Atlanta would be like Boortz going against McConnell in Cincinnati.

If I am reading this list correctly...and if its up to date...Mike is only live in 3 markets. I don't recall hearing many callers from Lexington or Atlanta either. I'm thinking all of his callers are listening through WLW in Cincinnati or on XM.

I wonder if this show can stay viable. I'm no radio person but it doesn't look like its taken off at all.

Is the affiliate list up to date? It's not uncommon for Premiere Radio to not tell their talent anything. Leo Laporte doesn't know he has a new affiliate til someone calls him from the market.

Sorry guys, I am new around here. Can somebody tell me who McConnell is?

He's a gut struggling for recognition outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Well if that's his affiliate list after a year, ech. I don't think it was a smart move for Premiere Radio to pop another mid-day talk show on against Glenn Beck. Mike might stand a chance if that wasn't the timeslot.

Seriously. What's with the truckers' attachment to that local Cincinnati station? That and channel 165. Those guys love Clear Channel's XM offerings.

WLW has always catered to truckers during the overnight hours.

Now McConnell has taken it upon himself to carry the torch during the daytime hours.

Also don't forget even before XM carried the station, it reached 38+ states at night, so while many of the topics were local, it reached a nationwide audience even without syndication or XM.

Has that 38 states claim ever been verified?

I know it may have been in the past, but when I have traveled out west and back, I have never really picked up WLW anywhere west of the Mississippi.

I just wonder how long its been since WLW has been heard in 38 states, via traditional airwaves.

I do know that they carried America's Trucking Network on Open Road channel 171. Sirius carries Midnight Trucking Network. Not like they could've carried ATN anyway, and still can't.

I can hear it in Georgia at night. Right now I'm in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and this place gets pounded by Mexico and Cuba at night. It probably could be heard in said states were it not for power lines, dimmers, microwaves, class C AMs, and other objects emitting the same frequencies. Just wait til IBOC kicks in.

For the newbie:
Mike McConnell is the 9-noon host on WLW (and apparently other cities as well).
He can often be very entertaining, depending on the topic and guest.
Although I risk serious flames, I consider him to be one of the rare hosts who allows both sides of an argument to be discussed - and while he makes his own political views known, they do not override intelligent discussion.
His biggest fault is that he is prone to mis-interpret callers and argue with them even though they are agreeing with him.
Others, of course, will disagree with my whole analysis.

On the 38 state claim, I've heard it all over this side of the Rockies and talked to people who've listened in the mountains west of LA. It's the loudest AM on the dial at night in Hot Springs - not too far west of the Mississippi, but still the other side. It's beats all of the Chicago 50k's there and outdoes WSM, which is much closer. It's hard to imagine many other signals that are better or cover more bodies.

I tried to pick it up in northern Texas and couldn't.

While I'm sure there are occasional times when it has been heard in many far off places, I doubt that in any one night its anywhere near 38 states.

There's a station on 700AM in Dallas TX as well as Salt Lake City,UT so that is why the signal doesn't go to far west of the Mississippi.
