This great old series came up as a point of conversation the other day in a meeting I was attending. What happened to it???

In the 70s and 80s it was all over daytime tv. Is this show in syndication anywhere, or available on DVD?

It's not on DVD, but has remained in syndication. It was running here (Dallas/Fort Worth) until about a year ago. It has also recently been picked up by a station in Los Angeles (KDOC, channel 56), which is running it on Saturday nights as part of a military show block with Hogan's Heroes.

I remember when WGN TV Chicago played reruns of Mc Hale's Navy for years, as did WKBD TV 50 Detroit. That was a funny show.

One of the show's problems is that a majority of the catalog is in
black and white. Only the last couple of seasons, when the show moved from the Japanese theatre to the European theatre, are in color. The Europe shows, in my estimation, fall far short of the great humor in the early shows.

"McHale's Navy" ran for four seasons, all of which were in black and white. The first three seasons were set in the Pacific theater, and the final season was set in Europe (Italy). So you're wrong about the shows set in Italy being in color -- they were in black and white, same as the rest of the series. I do agree with you that those episodes aren't as funny at the early shows; they clearly made a major change to try to boost a flagging program, and failed.

All the Mchale's Navy's were in black & white. It aired on ABC in the early 60's In the 1980's some of the episodes were "colorized" . I don't think they got past the first season. Comedy Central ran them for a while when it first came on.
There were a couple theatrical movies with the TV cast (one without McHale).
They were filmed in color. Seems like they never show up on TV either.

Thanks for the correction. Still, with the programs in Black and White, it is a tough sell, especially to stations marketing to the younger demos. My 11-year old daughter refuses to watch ANY black and white television show or movie. I have a hard time getting my older kids to watch much b/w either.

It's amazing how many people still can't get past the whole black and white issue. Sometimes, it really adds something.

Case in point: "Combat" was a great show in B&W. The last season was in color, and it looked very drab and lifeless. I think B&W really added to the atmosphere of it, something that was lost when color was added.

And I find it ironic that younger viewers who refuse to watch B&W have no problem watching B&W videos on MTV (whenever they play videos, that is), or movies like "Sin City.

...same goes for "The Avengers" and "Branded." In fact, I once met Patrick MacNee and he specifically told me that the colour seasons of "The Avengers" were nowhere near as good as the black&white season with Diana Rigg that got ABC to buy the show for the U.S. (ironically, on the basis that the show would transfer to colour production the following season)...

Out of curiousity, I went to the I/Pax website. McHales's Navy is running on Thursday 12/7/06 at 6:30 EST. Wonder if they are going to run more in the future? I would like to see that show again.
