McIntire to KDKA?

Anyone hear that John McIntire is taking over the Saturday slot that Chris Moore has held for many years?

Well, there goes probably one of the funnier Krenn & Randy segments if he DOES go there. Just thinking, why hasn't KD stepped up & featured another liberal chatter to go with Romigh & Moore? Any opins on this?

Doubtful...

I can't imagine that John would be the one replacing Chris.

For those not aware, Chris announced Saturday that he was told 10 days ago or so that his Saturday night shift would end due to KD's desire to attract a younger demo. His Sunday night show remains.

Chris -- who deserves much better, he's arguably one of the most talented talk show hosts in our market -- noted that KD plans a program mixing music and talk.

My joke: Rob Pratte spinning polkas.

My more likely bet: A brokered program in which a concert promoter, club owner, or other "player" does an infomercial for upcoming gigs. Brokered shows fit KDKA's weekend model. What a waste of watts.

Roll over, Frank Conrad.

Amen, but see my thoughts elsewhere.

Don't joke ... in polka-mad Western Pennsylvania, with a fellow who bounces from shift-to-shift-to-shift? "Pratte's Polka Palisade" isn't out of the realm of the possible.

And much of their weekday model too, as their "here's what the advertisers at News Talk 1020 are doing" capsules show us.

I wondered if that was an aftershock of the West Coast earthquake, but decided Pittsburgh was too far away. Thanks for the answer.

No doubt about it ...

KDKA announced today that John McIntire will introduce a new "KDKA Lite Lounge," which the station claimed to be "the first show of its kind in Pittsburgh to mix issues, music, conversation and commentary." It will run Saturdays from 7 p.m. to midnight except during baseball season, when McIntire will follow the Pirate post-game show.

Re: No doubt about it ...

I give them credit for trying something new and different. Don't know if this will mix with their core audience but McIntire might get some people to sample who are not part of the KD demo. Tough time to launch because the Pirates play most Saturday nights, which probably limits him to a couple of hours with a totally random start time.

Could be the first step toward a much-needed Monday-Friday overhaul.

I'm not on the same political wavelength as John McIntire, but nevertheless, I was a big fan of "Nighttalk" on PCNC. McIntire's a good host and can keep a show moving--plus, he was always able to get guests from both sides, and some pretty big shooters to boot.

I'm sure McIntire will now be able to call upon the vast resources he has at the City Paper as well to provide some off-beat stories and arts stuff.

While Chris Moore is good on "On Q" as a moderator/facilitator of the panel segment, I just never thought he was that good as a radio talk host. This isn't to demean his talent or intelligence--most everyone agrees he's very bright and well-researched. I agree. Just not my cup of tea on the radio.

However, I will say this: KDKA was about 5 months too late with McIntire. Why not John for the overnight show? Or is the weekend a tryout for the overnight spot, which has historically had shows similar to what McIntire proposes.

Re: No doubt about it ...

Smells like a tryout for something.

On the overnight show, they made it clear they wanted to maintain the same approach Bob Logue took (insufferably patient and sympathetic with old folks moaning about aches and pains and property taxes), probably because they wanted to hang onto the clients Logue brought in. When they advertised the position, it was stated in the ad that they wanted the Logue style, so that's apparently what they're making Dickson do. I would assume over time that requirement will fade.

But if they want someone to be a surrogate Undercover Bob, McIntire clearly ain't their guy.

You're mostly correct...

I seriously doubt if this will get many people to "sample" KDKA, as it probably won't be promoted, so no one will know this experiment is going on except current KDKA listeners and the tiny handful of radio freaks and geeks who pay close attention to this kind of stuff.

But I believe that you are correct about them trying something new and different. This whole things looks to me like an experiment towards developing that Monday-Friday overhaul you refer to. I predict that they'll use this as a low-visibility test program to tweak and adjust the format. It will be broadcast over the air, but with little or no attempt at promotion for a while. They'll make a great many mistakes, learning from them and correcting them. Then, after at least a few months of work, then they'll have a finished product which they'll roll out with great hoopla and fanfare.

That's my opinion, based on the standard practices of businesses in other industries that attempt to create innovative new products.

I don't imagine they will mess with the morning show, Pintek or Hons just because of the expense of buying out some of those contracts. I can't see daypart ratings anywhere, but WPGB's gains have been really steady since Rush moved , so maybe something totally different replaces O'Reilly?

Or maybe, since this would be kind of a train wreck in between Pintek and Hons, is going a different direction in the evening after baseball is done... Eliis Cannon makes a sports show on KD pretty irrelevant except as a baseball lead-n for 40 minutes.<P ID="signature">______________
