...as only perhaps he can be. The entertainer and fund raiser, seated on a darkened stage, managed in a mere three minutes to intricately intertwine the plight of hundreds of thousands of people suffering from Muscular Dystrophy, with the plight of untold thousands in the Gulf States.

No bashing of the Right.....No bashing of the Left......he laid no blame, but asked for donations for both worthy causes.

The producer then told him to get to the podium, where he introduced himself as "SuperJew", then introduced the first act of the 20 hour telethon, an African dance troupe, "The Debbie Allen Dancers".....

Despite a plethora of health problems, Lewis looks slimmer than in the past decade, and appears to be in as good a shape as hes going to be.....

Hes off and running!

I see the telethon is based in Beverly Hills Ca. this year. What happened to the tradition of hosting it from Las Vegas like in the past?

Didn't it originate at CBS Television City last year?
______________

Hasn't been in Vegas for a few years. Can't recall exactly what the problem was that saw Jerry move the party from Vegas, but he continues to use entertainers via video from Vegas.

Considering the way he's looked the past few years, he looks great this year! It was really painful to watch the bloated Jerry.

Just a guess, but it might not be too easy for Jerry (as well as some of the telethon's other regulars) to travel the past few years, considering his age & health problems.

He was on steroid medication the last few years which is why he looked like that. He wasn't inhaling chips - he was stuck on evil meds which pack on weight like crazy.

The "Love Network" has been originating from CBS Television City since 2002.

Jerry Lewis told Larry King that he lost nearly 75 lbs since he got off the steroids and he doesn't even play baseball. ; )

Here in Tampa, the Telethon is only on for six hours this year on our ABC affiliate...9 am until 3 pm. Amazing.

Amazing... I am surprised MDA would allow WFTS only to carry six hours of a 20 hour show. Is it on cable anywhere in Tampa when WFTS is not carrying it? Could WFTS partner with another station in the area (i.e. WMOR or Bay News 9) to carry the whole thing. Even in the Boston DMA we have two stations which are carrying almost the whole telethon. Sister stations WMUR-Manchester and WCVB-Boston are carrying the telethon from 9PM Sunday until golf from nearby (at least to WCVB) Brookline, MA starts at 3:00. Then coverage goes to New England Cable News (NECN) for the last 3-4 hours.

What I wish would happen is the golf air on one station and the telethon on the other (I have DirecTV and of course NECN is not on DirecTV even in New England.)

Deutsche Bank tournament is being held at TPC in Norton, MA which
is located about good 40 miles from Brookline, MA.

All ABC affils are contractually obligated to run golf.

It's not the MDA's fault -- it's ABC's, due to golf.

Just as appalling that WFTS no longer starts the telethon Sunday night, following the general trend many stations are following, starting the telethon the following day. In WFTS's case, it all started in 1999 when ABC had "Millionaire" at 9PM, with WFTS starting the telethon at 10PM. Then it moved to after the 11PM news. Then it moved to 6AM. And now, it's moved to after "Good Morning America".

WFTS will show the final two hours of the telethon, including the annual "You'll Never Walk Alone" climax, following golf, 6PM to 8PM.

Could be worse, though -- Fox affil KCPQ ch.13 in Seattle joins the Love Network at 9AM PT (12 Noon ET), when the telethon already netted $24 million nationally. Many stations on the Pacific coast will also not join in until 8AM PT.

> Is it on cable
> anywhere in Tampa when WFTS is not carrying it?

WGN, of course.

Of course, as in the past, WGN will be showing baseball this afternoon. Like WFTS, WGN will also delay the final two hours until 6PM ET.

The trouble is Scripps doesn't have any other TV properties in Tampa Bay, and I don't know if Bright House or Hearst-Argyle (never mind that some of their stations show the telethon) want to play ball with WFTS.

Also, I don't think it's a good idea for Bay News 9 to carry the telethon -- not only will it disrupt their news schedule, not everyone gets the channel, as it's exclusive to Bright House systems. Some get Comcast, Adelphia, the small dishes, or just have a regular TV antenna.

By the way -- does any Love Network station show any paid ads during the local breaks? WFTS shows an ad before going to the local segment. In past years, WFTS would show a promo before going to their local segment.
Edited by rugrats1 on 09/05/05 04:12 PM.

I'm not saying it is the fault of MDA. However it it were me I would be trying to look for another station in town. Of course they could be an there may be no takers. I noticed WFTS has carried the telethon for about 11 years. Who had it before them?

The reason I thought of WMOR is that there are Hearst-Argyle stations (i.e WMUR and WCVB)who do carry the telethon. Another thought was WXPX (why not WOPX in Orlando is carrying the telethon.) Sure would be better than i's regular programming and infomercials.

I would hope at least since the Boston DMA has 2 ABC affiliates that in this situation they could let at least one of them continue with the telethon and the other carry golf. I do give Scripps credit for carrying the last two hours on tape. WMUR is not (I guess that is because it is on NECN.)

Same here in the Puget Sound. It's been that way here for several years. How many other markets are only running a porttion of the telethon? Is interest waning? My cable system carries WGN out of Chicago and as far as I know they run the entire telethon. BTW, the telethon airs on the Seattle-Tacoma FOX afilliate.
______________

Maybe it might be time for the MDA/Love Network to team up with I? There's a thought. The telethon could also be offered to any non-I markets(other than ABC affilliates), but they should at least air 8 to 12 hours of the telethon. I could see breaking away for local newscasts.
______________

Could be worse. I was suprised to see that in the Tupelo/Columbus/Starkville market the telethon isn't even carried.

WTVA-9-NBC controls two other stations in the market, the Fox (WLOV-28) and the ABC (WKDH-45) and cannot be bothered to carry the telethon on any of the three stations. Even if you don't want to have a local fundraising effort, at least carry the damn telethon.

From what I've seen on the MDA website, almost the entire Liberty Stations Group carries the telethon. There are two in Mississippi, WLBT-3-Jackson and WLOX-13-Biloxi (which I would imagine has preempted it due to Hurricane Katrina coverage) and I believe all the Liberty stations carry the full 20 hours.

I agree with some of the other posters about stations who carry only a portion of the telethon...its just shameful. It's rerun season and its Labor Day weekend...the "regular" viewing audience isn't there for the reruns, so why not carry something else for a change.

But money trumps all. Its just shameful.

Even MDA loses to baseball in Chicago...The cubs/cardinals "super series" (cough) shoved aside the love network...

In Tampa, CBS has tennis, ABC Golf, Fox (o and o) has to run all their "Judge" shows, NBC has their soap operas...

I would hope that "I" doesn't pick it up, since half the time the signal is unwatchable on cable. Can't even sit through an inning of a Devil Rays game...even when theyre winning!

I've watched the telethon on the internet. No local cutaways. Better that way.

> I agree with some of the other posters about stations who

One thing that really got me was a piece on the national segment that salutes the Love Network affiliates and their hard work -- the celebrity in that piece (forgot who) mentioned the local hosts that stay up through the night. Kind of hard to do if the telethon doesn't start until the following morning. (Of course, Jerry doesn't stay up all night anymore himself, but that's against the point.)

Telethons are about putting people -- and their viewers -- on an endurance test, in the name of charity. To have a telethon that's only a few hours long defeats the purpose.

I no longer watch WXPX (Tampa Bay's Pax/i station), nor do I have it programmed in my TV. But when I did in their early days, I swear 25% of the time I see Bay News 9 in its place.

Of if you're one of the few that still has a big C-Band dish, you could see it via satellite -- practically the same thing that the internet sees.
