Meadowlark Lemon, Harlem Globetrotters Star, Dead at 83

Meadowlark Lemon, the charismatic star of the Harlem Globetrotters for more than two decades, died Sunday at age 83.

Dubbed “the Clown Prince of Basketball” for his on-court prowess and humor, Lemon joined the team in 1954 shortly after a stint in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and became one of its most dynamic players.

He died in Scottsdale, Arizona, of undisclosed causes.

One of my favorite boyhood memories was when my dad took me to see the Globetrotters at the UofA gym in the mid-50's. We happened to be sitting right where Lemon threw the paper confetti into the audience. He was indeed one of a kind.

I saw him twice with the Globetrotters -- once in my hometown of Bloomington IN, at the old IU Fieldhouse in 1968, and again when I took my little brother to see them in the Madhouse on McDowell, aka Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, in 1974.

RIP, Meadowlark. :(
