Meanwhile, back to Country

A couple of facts to consider

A. COYOTE was an excellent Country station. Given more time and support it would have continued to put a dent in KIIM. No, it probably would not have beaten them, but...

B. KIIM is a superior Country statiion. They are very smart and very good at what they do. They have a big stick, loyality with listeners and clients, credibility and history. This is not to say they can't be had. So...

C. When a group accepts the opportunity to "put a dent" in KIIM and put a highly competitive Country format AND STICK WITH IT, they and many others in town will benefit. We're talking about splintering KIIM's dominance. Therefore...

D. Not trying to go head to head with KIIM ... and not trying to sound the same as KIIM ... and knowing that they are a flanking (and highly irritating) influence on "Tucson's Country Leader" is what it will take. And some guts.

E. There are several valid flanking formats which are only heard on internet and satellite radio. There's the younger/hotter Country. There's the Oldies "Classic Country". There's the Country Rock version. There's the "HANK" format (the Country version of JACK). Any of these could pick off a 4 or 5 share from KIIM. And make some money. With the added bonus of improving the ranking (and share?) of this new station's clustermates.<P ID="signature">______________

Tucson is not in Oklahoma. Thank God. But Tulsa has THREE country stations in the top 5! Who are these people who say there is "not a valid business" in being a flanking country station when KIM is pulling digits in the teens?

Perhaps in response to my earlier post, KGVY could run Jones Classic Country off the sat and compete during the day. Wouldn't put much of a dent in KIIM, but they'd have a more exclusive format, and they have no need to flank to help other cluster stations.

Why do we need another country station? There are other formats not on the dial in Tucson. Jazz? etc. Please, before anybody uses the excuse that it didn't work on 97.5, neither did TWO country stations.

Liam, you need to re-read the posts above.

We didn't say another "sub-standard," no-budget, automated "jukebox" of a station could compete--we mean "real" competition. Jocks, promotions, marketing--a real go at it could definitely offer up some real competition to KIIM.

Exactly right.

Now ... what cluster needs enough help? And is strategic enough to make it work? That they will put which station to the task?

I am perfectly capable of reading. Who said anything about sub-standard? The previous country stations on 97.5 had jocks, did promotions and marketing. I was asked to help out at one of their promotions in fact. What this market needs is some REAL diversity in music. If you want to learn about promotions, marketing, etc, go to work a station.

Of course! Why didn't I think of that!???

Thanks for the great advice! I'm going to "go to work a station right now!"
