Meanwhile, Back To KT'R...

A couple random items noticed this morning:

When you hear Deputy Dan on K-Lite, it may be a canned report!
While he was live on Snooze 92/3 KT'R at 6:49, he was also on 98/7
with a recorded drop.

On their playback of Paul Harvey at about 6:52 (from the live feed
at 6:30), why does KT'R cover Harvey's live read network spot
with a PSA? Besides today, I've noticed this several other times
in the recent past (am normally out of the car by then so I can't
say this "covering the spot" scenario occurs every day).

KTAR isn't the only station to do this. Pre-recorded traffic reports have been going on for quite some time. Mark Jeffrey/Ed Hammers, etc do live reports on KFYI, but recorded (and usually less detailed) reports for Xtra Sports 910, KOY, Mix 96.9, etc. Due to the flexibility of talk shows/clocks etc, it would be almost impossible for one or even two reporters to cover multiple stations live.

As for Paul Harvey, it's just another dinosaur that KTAR... FM! needs to put to sleep. It's hard to run a "hip" news/talk station to compete with KFYI and have the 179 year old Paul harvey telling us about Mrs. Baker in Deadhorse, Alaska celebrating her 110th birthday. KTAR has been covering the commercial reads of Paul Harvey with PSAs or local spots forever. "...and now, page 2 (cut to circle K spot)".

Yeah, but McBland is Paul Harvey's dad! The Nurse and I have a wager goin' on whose vocal cords will quit first...McBland or Tom Leykis? Radio is better for whoever wins this one!

:D Is Pat McMahon Boring Where You Are? :D

Not forever. Before the last AMD hot clock shift a few months ago (maybe it was
when they kicked off KT'R-FM), Harvey aired about 6:37 and I heard it almost
every day--with the live read spot intact.

Now on the big midday broadcast (apologies to Sammy Sherwood ;)), at least one
of the positions is a local avail.

BTW, the sponsor this morning that you didn't hear on KT'R was Smart Balance
(I listened to the AM 'cast on paulharvey.com).

so, is krazy kid permanent 7-9? i don't hear produced show open and promos for kid yet.

no other ktar-fm tryouts?

where did scott & casey end up? i thought those two would've be perfect for 1-4.

Mrs. Baker in Deadhorse, Alaska is proof that Harvey has one listener younger than him. ;D

TMISU are just using Kid until they wrap the deal up with one of the two on the short list. They don't even pay him !

Its the way Russ Hill operates.

As much as I really enjoyed Kid no both 103.9 & 104.7 - I just can't get used to him on KTAR.

I don't know - maybe it's the fact that every other night he has to talk about illegal immigrants and the fact that they are "breaking the law" by being here illegally. ::) And, it seems to me that he is still best fit for a hip hop/top 40 station. I just can't take his points very seriously.

We're convinced TMISU don't listen to News 92~three, where Hip Hop used to live! Case in point: ASU basketball promo run Sunday night on FM tagged with "..be sure to catch the Herb Sendek show on ESPN 8~sixty AM". Is this the same 8~sixty AM that runs a continuous loop of promos telling listeners to switch to Sports Parking Lot 6~twenty AM? And Nurse Jeff caught another one: the lead story on the 6:30pm news was who won the Daytona 500! TMISU obviously have Seattle on their minds as no one seems to be paying attention to what's on the air in Phoenix!

a) I that's probably a spot paid for by ASU.

b) The show is on 860, so they should probably promote it as such.

Not during ASU broadcasts, or local programming.

Who really cares what the lead story is at 6:30pm on a Sunday? Do you think Bonneville would be listening? Was there any more significant story at 6:30 last night? I would guess not.

You're right...TMISU DON'T listen! How else do you explain Pat McBland wasting several hours of airtime Monday afternoon talking with an ASU prof about ex Presidents; a local psychic; and a coin dealer about the new $1.00 coin? Pretty riveting radio, huh? But at least it's not taped programming coming from the East coast!

Dang!

You mean I missed "ask the nums, er nusmismas, uh numistasti, uh, coin dealer?"

Sounds like it was fascinating.

Yes... and no. Occasionally they run an actual, honest-to-goodness show. One I know of off the top of my head is the Lisa Love half-hour on Tuesdays.

Well, this takes us back to the Super Bowl question... is News 92-3 forbidden from ever speaking about sports again for the rest of eternity? The Daytona 500 is a relatively big deal, crossing over into "entertainment" from just "sports." If it was a slow news night, I could easily see why they'd lead with that story. I doubt they'd do a story at all, led alone lead with one, about the winner of any other race in the entire Nascar season, much like I doubt they'd discuss any football game at any length besides the Super Bowl.

Not a Nascar fan, nor an avid 92-3 listener (I listen to the sports yak on 620 more than anything else). Just trying to point out where I see why they could do a news story on a -- gasp! -- sp*rt*ng event.

If the Daytona 500 was held at PIR ( ???) and just ended minutes ago on Sports Parking Lot 6~twenty, mehbee. The Nurse and I question the newscaster's story selection and the fact numerous errors like these occur on New 92~three, where Hip Hop used to live, fly under the radar screen of TMISU.

I still respectfully but heartily disagree. Again, this question comes to mind: what was going to bump that from the top spot at twilight on Sunday? If there was nothing else more lead-worthy, should they have just skipped the newscast altogether?

I won't disagree that it's a "questionable" choice for a lead story, but hardly deserving of the condemnation it's specifically received in this thread. I found myself wondering why news outlets were leading with the story of Anna Nicole Smith's death, wondering why it wasn't relegated to E!'s breaking news or some such outlet. I suppose it all comes down to what one considers is newsworthy.

Newwwwws 92-3 hasn't been setting the world on fire, but I think this one incident isn't as egregious as it's being made out to be.

Hmmmm...the Nurse and I have suggested Aunt Carlos bring back the exciting "Guess when we'll have our first 100 degree day? contest. To kick off the promotion, Auntie C. could get K-Joe's Kim Dillon and her bud Pppppreston Westmoreland to lay down a few voicers. Now...what could we offer as a prize? ???
