Meddling LJ Pisses Off Stephen King!

Meddling LJ better stay away from his prom...he's really pissed off Stephen King. Word is Julias has been working behind the scenes for the last year to steal Universty of Maine sports from AM 620. Well, he's done it. I hear WVOM will be the new home of Hockey and Football. I was tod Julias had the help of a guy named Jim Dow who is on the board of the University and Govener Baldacci. His car will probably start chasing him around now, which is not a bad thing.

While I don't doubt UMaine sports may be heard on a different station in Bangor, the reason you gave is most likely not accurate. UMaine sold the rights to their sports programs to Learfield Communications based in the midwest. They own and produce college sports games for a signficant number of Universities. You can easily google them and find out more. In a nutshell, by selling the rights, UMaine has nothing to do with who does or doesn't carry the games, nor would the Govenor or anyone else. These are not beneficial relationships for radio stations who used to deal directly with the University because entities like Learfield basically make you bend over to carry the games. They do so by making you carry alot of different sports you have no interest in, coaches shows for these non popular sports you don't want in the first place, extra inventory to promote these games, etc and etc and etc.
[EDIT]

[EDIT-vulgarity]

I don't believe that WVOM has the rights to Football or Hockey. While I believe they tried, common sense dictates they weren't awarded the contracts.

First LJ has moved on, and in his self congratulatory memo to the staff, he's taken care of himself, and left everyone else in the lurch. Matter of fact, in the staff meeting that supposedly took place last week, he said that with the sale no one was assured of a job.

2nd, with the sale of Clear Channel in Bangor, I don't think that Learfield can possibly know what form WVOM is going to have. Certainly it's a huge risk to award the contract to such an "unknown"

3rd- I can't believe that Clear Channel would let them do it, given the rate of return their looking for on any adventure. They forced their station to back out of High School Basketball with little or no warning to the schools because they weren't going to make "enough".

4th - Those are the two pre-eminent sports that UMaine has. Can't imagine that Learfield would get enough from those two, to then have someone just make do with Basketball and Baseball.

There are more reasons, but I'll welcome your comments ;)

Why is it that every time a lofty claim is made regarding the business prowess of Larry Julius, the person posting spells his name "Julias"?

Do we have the same poster writing fairy tales under different account names?

:)

I don't mean to question that Larry J. might be a smart radio guy. Maybe he is. I don't know him, so I can't say. But some weird stuff has been posted surrounding the misspelling "Julias".

Just sayin'.

Maybe the sports thing is true. WVOM is teasing a "big announcement by management" Thursday morning at 7:35. What else could it be? I can't see them making a big deal on the air about a sale...but with CC...anything is possible!

Maybe it is true.....

From wvom's website

Plus, management will be in the studio and we'll get George Hale on the phone from Florida as we make a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT that will make headlines and will have some people going bananas.

I guess the subject of this thread was accurate...Stephen King is truly pissed off! Check out the ZON website for his statement. I hear some heads will roll for some "ball droppers" at ZON. I also would advise Meddling better have one of his Bangor leave behinds start his car in the morning.

After everything Stephen King has done for the University Of Maine over the years (decades, actually), they do THIS to him? I know business is business ... but at what cost? I guess selling your soul ISN'T just something you'd find in a Stephen King novel. This will surely go down in history as one of the biggest public relations blunders in U-Maine history.
