Media General Lacking Effort? You Decide...

Yesterday, I saw a story linked via Google News about the new prostate cancer screenings. It was from WSAV's website:

I was actually drawn to the link by the shiny thumbnail chyron image displayed on the page.

Then, this morning, on Google News, I was drawn to this story from WSAV's sister station, WNCT, again, by the thumbnail image displayed:

You view these two stories side by side and look at their chyrons and you tell me if they can put a little more effort in distinguishing their schemes a little bit different from one another.
 
It's not unheard of. Go to wtnh.com and wwlp.com (ABC New Haven, CT and NBC Springfield, MA, respectively) and tell me what you see. :)
 
What's the point of your complaint? Two co-owned stations, each serving a separate television market, look somewhat similar in their appearance, both on the air and in website form. Big deal.
 
The Gannett and Fox (owned) stations also have common graphics as well.

Many of these are thanks to a single station handling graphics for the entire group.
 
Media General owns WJAR Providence. After they bought the station they never updated the set. It would be nice if they invested a little money into making things look nice sometimes.
 
Well, for starters, Media General is basically broke (but aside from that minor problem, I'm sure they'll run right out and buy a new set).
 
Well I guess WJAR's set was last updated only about 12 years ago, so I suppose it can wait because it's not that old.
<end sarcasm>

The other stations in the market have sets between 2 and 3 years old, and much better picture quality.
 
Add Hearst & (for the most part) NBC (other than LA/Chi/NY). WOuldn't be surprised to see more and more graphics consolidation...

Look at Canada:

If I showed you a newscast from a CBC station (O&O) - unless you knew the staff, you probably couldn't tell which city is was from - at least they have the city in the newscast title - CTV stations' local newscasts are "CTV News" - not even "CTV Toronto News" or "CTV Calgary News"... Heck, if you have satellite, you have to look at the guide to figure out which station you're on - lots of simulcasts and very homogenous looking across the board...

I have only seen one Media General owned station - WFLA-TV Tampa which I thought was excellent. Last I knew their newscasts were number 1 in the market as well.

In New England, we have several Hearst owned stations... WPTZ/WNNE, WMTW and WCVB all have the same music and graphics packages. WMUR is probably the only Hearst owned station which runs a different graphics and music package that I know of and you will see at times someone from WMUR on WCVB or vice versa.
 
I was in Tampa a couple of weeks ago, and watched WFLA a little bit. I noticed all sorts of technical errors, and I don't think they are #1 anymore, because WTSP was running #1 promos.
