MEDIA GENERAL MAKING COX PAY 200 PERCENT MORE TO CARRY WJAR

Now I understand why cable companies are angry. I found out that WJAR and Media General are trying to charge COX Cable 200% more to carry it's signal. That's crazy! That's the same thing as if someone is paying $750 to rent an apartment. But next month they'll have to pay $1,500 for the same apartment. These TV stations are losing their shirts and losing their minds at the same time.

However this is the last day of the month. So I expect some crazy agreement to be reached today so that WJAR remains on COX cable. I couldn't care less either way though. I have an antenna. I get two NBC affiliates today and I'll continue to get two NBC affiliates next week. It's just insane how much money these Broadcasters are charging Cable companies. Details below.

The quoted release doesn't exactly come from an uninterested party.

Your rent doubles, and you have to find a way to come up with another $750 a month. That's indeed a big deal.

The price of a gumball doubles, and you have to find a way to come up with another 5 cents a day. I don't think that's going to break your bankbook.

It's not like WJAR is asking to take an extra $5 out of your monthly cable bill. You're paying a LOT less (probably two orders of magnitude less) for this channel.

i.e., there's probably a pretty good reason Cox is quoting a percentage increase and not an increase in dollars and cents.

Regardless, WJAR will ultimately succeed in raising Cox cable rates. Doesn't matter about order of magnitude, it boils down to a rate increase. All to pay for the "convenience" of having a free OTA ram 20+ minutes of commercials per hour at you over a wire. Cable giving it's customers an opportunity to cancel the local channels tier will fix this monkey business fast.

Only if Cox chooses to.

If you expect Media General to absorb their increased costs of doing business, then you certainly need to expect Cox to absorb *their* increased costs.
