Media Ownership Reform Act of 2005

I was just reading on Radio Online (http://****************/ click on News Round Up Dated 7/14/05) concerning the Media Ownership Reform Act of 2005 (MORA) introduce by Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY). Does any one here believe this would help improve radio in Jacksonville if the stations were distributed among more owners?
______________

I guess I am the only one who found this interesting. It seems to me that many have issues with one media company owning so many outlets that we feel we are hearing the same thing in town and across the country. It seems to me there was a wider variety of options before companys could own as much as they do. Just one guys opinion.
______________

Ed,

I don't think the Dems really care about dividing up Clear Channel's Empire to give more disc jockeys and news people jobs! Look at the verbage they use, "Diversity!" The only thing they want is for the 'Fairness Doctrine" to return. Three hours of Rush equals three hours of Al Franken! It would never work the other way though, One Hour of 60 minutes would not even mean one minute of Britt Hume!

Would I like to see a cap put back on ownership? I thought the old 7/7 rule was great! But for the Fairness Doctrine for Rush, Neal, Sean, Savage etc. It already exists. It's called ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN!

The Soup

Re: Ed - I've been interested in this subject for years. For many of us, deregulation seemed like a good idea at the time - especially for struggling radio stations. As with anything, many laws have the best of intention but you know the rest. Frankly, I believe the mega communications companies do own too much in a single market. I would love to see a change.

I think diversity IS a good thing. Politically, let's just say I am the "Anti-Rush." With that, on the occasions I tune to WOKV during the week, I find myself getting way too aggrevated. I wish there were alternative so talk show junkies and/or those who want to hear ALL opinions can do just that. With more communications companies/ownership in the picture, that's one way that can happen.

For the FM side of things, limited ownership has brought us automation, a homogenized sound and loss of true local flavor. Just about everyone I know listens to CDs in their cars because radio is boring. Indeed we can do better.

Will things change? Maybe down the road - the case will be made.

Well said, at least some fm radio has become boring. While Satellite radio is growing, the NAB and radio consultants don't understand why and think it's going to fail. Since the age of Clear Channel less people are tuning in. I don’t remember a time like now when more people are complaining about good old radio and the people in charge don’t get it either. In the near future, they'll be more Satellite radio and other clones yet to be named.
