Mega 103.5-HD2...

Could Mega 103.5 HD-2 make it on a real frequency? I know I know I know... dance can't make it blah blah blah... anyone think it's worth trying?

The issue is not about listeners. It is about selling commercials. Instead of asking of it would be worth trying you should ask if it was done.... would it sell?

My guess is no. Sure it would be cool, but no one would buy time on it. Thus rendering it doomed to fail.

Emmis has already tried and failed with Mega on 93.3, before it flipped to Hot.

That was several years ago. Times have changed and Dance music has seen a huge rise in the last couple of years.

Again, times have changed.

Yes, but not that much. Dance music has always had a vocal fan base, but it's still too small of a niche to support a radio station. Coupling the younger demographics with total radio revenues being down substantially from what they were a few years ago mean a dance format would be a financial disaster for most anyone who tried it.

But yet in 2006 to today Hypersonic is ran from 10pm to 12am on Saturday night on 101-x

The problem with 93.3 is signal if Mega launced on 107.1 and KGSR switched to 93.3 we would probally still have Mega. San Antonio's KTFM is playing more dance songs well at least the last week I was down there it beats that Hot AC crap they were doing for a while.

But if you don't advertise it and get advertisements and sponsors you don't get a good return for it as mention earlier by the previous posts.

Here is the problem with Dance formats these stations are known for narrow playlists for example then KCJZ 1067 Jamz you could hear IIO In The End, Amber's Sexual, and Daft Punk's One More Time every hour. A Dance station should play today's House, Techno, Electronic, and Trance and all of yesterday's classics (time edited ultimix's) from Lipp's Inc Funkytown, Technotronic's Pump up the Jam, Recall, Black Box Everybody, IIO, Daft Punk One More Time, Neelix's Disco Decay, and Wolgang Gartner tunes as well.

I am all for Mega FM (insert frequency) the best jamz of the 70s through today.

It sounds as if everyone is talking about it, but nobody has ever heard the station in it's current HD only form. I have said it here before, It's the best sounding HD station in either SA or Austin. It sounds like someone really is paying attention over there. And willdav713, it's very re-current based. I have heard some really cool 80's songs (like CCCP, Magazine 60, etc) but not sure if they play any 70's tracks. So before you beat them up too much, give it a listen - they stream at megahd2.com

Mega is a labor of love - Evan, current MD and afternoons on BOB was a part of the original Mega 93.3 and I was a fan of the format. Could Mega work on FM again? If anywhere, Austin it might. But there are too many other formats that work better for anyone to try and put dance back on a big signal.

Say what you will about HD radio - From the calls and emails I get, Mega seems to have a decent amount of listeners. And having something on HD is still better than not having it on the air at all.

I would use HD Radio on a full time if the signal was decent.

Curious about HD signals. From your posts, you live in a rural area between San Antonio and Austin so you should get both cities. You often mention Houston as well, so it seems like any signal is going to be an issue for you. So what is your preferred FM,AM, and HD channel in your area? And who comes in best?

Well my home place is near Austin about 30 miles south, I can receive Austin decent most of the time on my home HD Receiver. When I had it in my truck, it would drop out every time I go under power lines, even KBPA would do that. San antonio I can get KISS, Y-100, KONO HD part time, KBBT part time, Mix 96.1 every now and then. KKMJ most all the time. I also have a place out in southern Lavaca county I go a lot. I can usually pull in Houston HD pretty decent, HD comes in about 56dbu on my sangean hd1x tuner, I have both tuners in both places.

I heard Mega tonight coming back from Houston in Bastrop at 105.5, how long has that been on? Sounded good, but didn't go out very far.

According to the FCC database, Emmis does have a 250 watt translator in Bastrop on 105.5. Interesting choice for them to do Mega with it.

What good will that do for Austin though? It can only go 5 miles tops.

Maybe it's part of a plan to create a new station licensed to Bastrop so that co-owned KLZT Bastrop (formerly KGSR) can move closer to Austin.
