WGLM Lafayette should go spanish. You would have the whole market to yourself. Unlike some white people. Mexicans work, use cash for transactions, and they procreate... (meaning they don't use contraception or abort their unborn kids.) They're very family. This is a young vibrant demo that consumes. GLM would make alot of money fast.

While there might be enough of a hispanic population to support a Spanish language station, the question is; will there be enough advertisers to support a spanish station under any format? Lafayette is not a major market like Chicago, New York, Houston, Phoenix, and all other markets where there are plenty of advertisers to support spanish language formats. That's a big IF on a viable format in spanish.

Very true. A Spanish language format may be a smart idea for AMP or Schurz to put on one of their AM stations that does nothing more than simulcast their respective FM. It's not like WLAS and WASK-AM are getting superb ratings. Besides, their owners can afford to give this sort of experiment a shot since they have a lot of revenue coming in from their other stations. KVB, on the other hand, cannot afford to take such a risk. They need a sure-shot winning format for 106.7, not something that may or may not work for advertisers.

Count WLAS out as it's well financed by sports broadcast rights money but I don't know about WASK-FM.

You raise a question that I've always wondered about WLAS. With all of the Purdue sports WLAS broadcasts, you'd figure they'd cover the rest of the broadcast day with Fox Sports Radio or ESPN Radio. Sports talk would be perfect for WLAS. Not only would it be a frequently tuned-in station by all the sports nuts in the market, but it would also be a great station to combine with WSHP on the sales sheets.

Too bad Clisby is no longer with AMP. He could have put together one Hell of a local sports talk show.

I'd venture to guess the entire Spanish speaking population of Greater Lafayette wouldn't amount to a city the size of Delphi. No revenue there, especially for a stand-alone. If Indianapolis doesn't have a major signal dedicated to Spanish, Lafayette sure won't. It might have been wise for Kelly to have bought a second signal in town when she had the chance. Its certainly harder to compete with the clusters as a standalone.<P ID="signature">______________

I've often wondered why Lafayette has no News-Talk. With Purdue there, it might be good for a partial Air America schedule that balances out the remainder of the day with Rush, Hannity, etc.

Actually the percentage of Hispanics in Lafayette is much higher than that of Indianapolis. I believe I saw the lastest demographic numbers in Lafayette that show a 9% Hispanic population. This, coupled with the close proximity to heavily hispanic populated Frankfort gives this area a decent sized hispanic population.

Doesn't their sister station, 1570 WILO, have a Spanish language program at night? I remember hearing a promo for it on Shine a few years ago.

It won't happen in a million years, but Mega 99 would be a great name for the station if it did adopt the format. They have one killer signal in northcentral Indiana!

My old hometown of Logansport has a massive Hispanic population that would benefit from a Spanish station from Lafayette. I do see many 107.1 Radio Latina bumperstickers in town.

I'd be all for anything to dump the current format on 99.7. Such a waste of a big signal. What I want to know is how those folks in Logansport get 107.1 - I can't get it here in Kokomo, even on a car radio, unless I manage to park in *just* the right spot.

What about 1230 WSAL AM flipping to Spanish? Are they waiting for the last few listeners to die off first? ;)

(FWIW, there is a Spanish-language program on WHZR 103.7, IIRC on Sunday nights. Seemed to have lots of listener interaction and plenty of ads for car dealers.)

I also want to know what's holding up the carriage of WISH's WIIH-Univision on Insight Cable, since they seem to serve many areas that have a Hispanic population. From what I understand, Insight had initially been interested, but it seems like nothing's happened. Is it going to be negotiated as part of WISH's next retransmission consent deal? They should also consider putting it on a digital subchannel of both WLFI and WNDY.

the Only 3 Stations out of Channel 8 BUilding we get on Insight Cable here in Madison COunty is WISH, WNDY and The Local Weather Service CHannel no Sight of WIIH Here in madison COunty. From Channel 6 we get WRTV and News Channel 64. and from Channel 13 we get WTHR and WALV/Skytrack Weather Network

WMRI in Marion has a 50kw signal that covers Kokomo in their primary contour. That's why you can't easily get WYXY 107.1 from Booneville. As for those in Frankfort getting 107.1, both 106.9 & 107.1 are fringe areas, which might explain why they can get 107.1.

Lafayette had news talk at one time (in fact, WASK AM was full-service A/C for years). They did news talk on AM, later on FM with G.Gordon Liddy, Rush, Dr. Laura, Art Bell, locals Don Pratt and Ski Andersen. That ended when the oldies format started.<P ID="signature">______________

Reception of even the big Indy stations in Logansport is spotty..Logansport's about 80 miles away and in a valley. Was amazing, though, when I lived there, how many times I heard Q95 just blasting out of people's car stereos. Must have been using a super-duper booster.

I really don't see full time Spanish in North/West Central Indiana anytime soon, even WSAL or WILO. I don't know about WILO's Spanish show..last I knew WRSW-FM in Warsaw had Spanish on Sunday nights.<P ID="signature">______________

I caught WRSW-FM on the skip last Sunday and heard them playing a Spanish language show with Regional Mexican music.

WHZR in Logansport also airs a Regional Mexican Spanish language program on Sunday nights with lots of listener interaction. Although, Logansport has a pretty large Latino community to make the show pretty successful. Every once in awhile, I tune in from Lafayette just to hear a little something different on the dial.

I should probably point out that Radio Latina 107.1, WEDJ Danville, is the station the previous poster was referring to. :)

You're quite right, though. Kokomo is well within WMRI's primary contour, which makes WEDJ's reception nearly impossible in Kokomo/Howard County.

You'd probably have a better shot getting their sister station, "La Que Buena 810" WSYW in Indy. Now, WSYW is a daytime only operation, but it is a pretty decent full-service Spanish station. If you don't like Regional Mexican music, you probably wouldn't like the station, though.
