MEGA 26 - ENERO 2010

After an uneventful past few months in term of D/FW television facilities, a new digital station is now on. It's another MAKO low power facility (15 kW at 240 meters [787' HAAT]).

Britton's KODF/26 (RF-27) is now showing a ``coming soon'' graphic and music loop. The text is ``Mega 26 HD/Dallas-Ft. Worth/Enero 2010''.

Looks that way. Mega is the Miami-based Spanish-language programming service that sprung out of Spanish Broadcasting Systems' WSBS-TV Key West/WSBS-CA Miami. It also airs on KMCC 32 Laughlin/Las Vegas, WSJU-TV 30 San Juan, WHDO-LD 38.2 Orlando, WBWP-LP 57 West Palm Beach, WFHD-LD 36.2 Tampa, WHDC-LD 40.2 Charleston SC and KLPS-LD 19.2 Palm Springs. It is also available nationally on DirecTV Mas channel 405 and in Puerto Rico on channel 169.

Its programming is focused toward young Hispanics; no surprise there.

KODF's signal is surprisingly strong at my home, at least if my converter box's signal strength meter can be trusted. It's stronger than 31, 34, 38, 50, and 61.

The animated logo is in SD, but implies the new programming will be in HD. Interesting. So far, Telemundo 39 is the only Hispanic station in the area broadcasting an HD signal.

So does this mean that SBS will try to bring some of their radio stations too?

Mega... also airs on ... WFHD-LD 36.2 Tampa...

No it doesn't -- there's no such station in the Tampa Bay area. There is a LP channel 36 in Tampa, but it's a TBN repeater in St. Pete. Also, a search for WFHD in the FCC database does turn up a "WFHD-LP" -- in Ann Arbor, MI.

They are posting planned future programming on their own website: http://www.mega.tv/megatv36_2.shtml . TBN was granted permission to sell W36CO St. Petersburg to Local HDTV back in May (http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_det.pl?Application_id=1312430) and Local HDTV applied for digital flash cut, which was also granted last May. Don't know about the WFHD calls, as the Ann Arbor station just adopted them last February, but they have been silent since last December. Perhaps they're not coming back. Also unexpected: the MegaTV36.2 web page points to KMCC 32 Laughlin NV.

More accurately, young (and old) Cubans (also no surprise given its headquarters). Lots of Cuba-centric news and shows along with translated Brazilian soaps in the afternoon.

I don't have HDTV but 26 appears on my DishNetwork as "KODF" with the program guide showing "off air." It's been that way for at least a couple of weeks. There is programming, though, from Azteca America with the ID KLEG-CA 44.

KODF was one of the few LP stations carried on cable and Dish Network. Looks like Dish put "off air" on their program guide, and restored Azteca via KLEG 44, when KODF's analog station shut down. I expect Dish to pick up KODF's digital feed by the time their new programming returns next month.

So Azteca is channel 44 on Dish and channel 20 on TWC. What about you Ft. Worth folks? Does Charter Cable still carry Azteca?
