It seems like they had so much going for them, WEMG Philadelphia, WMGG and WLCC Tampa, WBZS/WBPS Washington, I would mention WLXE here but back then NY wasn't ready for an Mexican music station, but you get the point.
Two words: lousy facilities. It seems like they had so much going for them, WEMG Philadelphia, WMGG and WLCC Tampa, WBZS/WBPS Washington, I would mention WLXE here but back then NY wasn't ready for an Mexican music station, but you get the point.
I'd add one more thing: Lousy operators. Two words: lousy facilities.
Spending tens of millions of dollars each for poor AM and rimshot FM facilities at the peak of station valuations. It seems like they had so much going for them, WEMG Philadelphia, WMGG and WLCC Tampa, WBZS/WBPS Washington, I would mention WLXE here but back then NY wasn't ready for an Mexican music station, but you get the point.
After all, some of their stations had been on stations where there was a dominant station already on there. Two words: lousy facilities.
A few people told me that WLCC in Tampa (La Ley at the time) would go down for a week every once in awhile.I'd add one more thing: Lousy operators.
Basically, bankruptcy, right?Spending tens of millions of dollars each for poor AM and rimshot FM facilities at the peak of station valuations.
They would be better off doing Regional Mexican (like how they did with 1380 later on) or Spanish Tropical (like most of their stations) in Hartford. They did all news on 1380 in NYC and 1230 in Manchester, CT... Manchester/Hartford? really.. and it was a straight up simulcast... using a comrex that would disconnect from time to time
If they had looked at Puerto Rico, they would have seen that all news died there in the early 90's with the four or five all-news stations moving to talk, perhaps with a news-heavy block in the morning. The same occurred in the Dominican Republic with news stations like Radio Mil dying in the mid-80's as social/political talk (El Gobierno de la Mañana, etc) on stations like Z-101 took over. They would be better off doing Regional Mexican (like how they did with 1380 later on) or Spanish Tropical (like most of their stations) in Hartford.
